...but there will be no internal high capacity transportation between old terminal and the new one. I mean, nothing like people-mover or similar. Just a bus shuttle. That's a big failure ! It will be extremely annoying to make some transfers in that airport. The distance between the two buildings is about 2kms... How is that possible in an airport that aims to be a hub ?!

Madrid Barajas - the sexiest airport in the world?

Madrid Barajas

British architect Richard Rogers's incredible new terminal at Madrid Barajas is approaching completion and will have the capacity to handle 50 million passengers pa. In my opinion this is the best airport architecture anywhere in the world:

I like the fact that it's open and not a closed structure.

Barajas is very sexy indeed. A landmark building as the Viaduc de Millau is for south-western france IMO.

I just hate one thing : the flooring. Typical cheap fake marble that can be found in every 70s-80s spanish building.

Looks at out place in such a modern building.

That's a great looking airport. I think Terminal 2 in CDG is more sexy though.

Some more info:

The new terminal building (T4) will have a yearly capacity of 35 million passengers and be capable of handling 10,400 passengers an hour.

The wing-shaped 1km-long building will have a total floor area of 470,261m▓ and is designed with a wide range of environmentally friendly, energy consumption reducing installations such as efficient cooling systems, extensive shading to the fašades and roof lights and zonal lighting.

It will host 174 check-in desks, 26 security controls, 20 baggage conveyors, 38 boarding gates, 28 movable ramps, 76 elevators and 22 automatic escalators.

The new satellite building (T4s) will have a total floor surface of 287,384m▓ and will be capable of handling around 15 million passengers a year with 26 contact points.

An Automatic People Mover (APM) will connect the new terminal building to the satellite building. Automatically guided vehicles will transport passengers between two stations in a tunnel, with two platforms in the principal terminal and one in the satellite building.

The APM will cover a distance of 2,100m and run 24 hours a day. The transfer between stations will take around three minutes with trains stopping in two-minute intervals.

All Iberia's flights will land and take off from one (T4) or the other (T4s), also other members of the oneworld alliance will be at T4.

Oh I almost forgot that it definitely is a very beautiful terminal!!

The new terminal is sexy, the airport as a whole is not. The existing terminals are crap, and the airport refuses to close them, despite the size of T4 at least seeming adequate to take over all passenger operations.

It's a slap in the face to those of us who get stuck using the old terminals!

It's amazing and revolutionary for sure! But it's not quite in line with my tastes... ;P
