The extension of the U4 to "Elbbrücken" is going faster and will cost less than expected. If everything works fine, the opening of the extension is planned for 2018:

I didn't know that this extension would be elevated.
So, HafenCity Universität station is close to the ground? I thought it was a deep station.

Hamburg to order new U-Bahn trains
Thursday, October 02, 2014

HAMBURGER Hochbahn published a tender notice in the Official Journal of the European Union on September 30 for a contract to supply between 40 and 80 new trains for Hamburg's U-Bahn network

The 1432mm-gauge trains will need to be 40m long and capable of operating in formations of up to three sets. The tender specifies a minimum curve radius of 60m, a maximum speed of 80km/h and "passenger friendly" gangways between vehicles.

The 750V dc third rail trains will need to be equipped for semi-automatic train operation under Grade of Automation 2 (GoA2) in accordance with IEC 62290-1 standards. The first trains must be approved for operation in manual mode (GoA1) by 2019 and the fleet will need to be certified to German BOStrab standards for operation across the entire U-Bahn network.

HafenCity Universität is a deep station but not extremely deep, and it's about 1 km to the planned Elbbrücken station so the slope/incline won't be that hard.

Hamburg S-Bahn project costings updated
29 Jul 2015

GERMANY: Infrastructure manager DB Netz has provided detailed cost estimates for the proposed Line S4 Ost extension of the Hamburg S-Bahn network to Bad Oldesloe.

The project would require upgrading 36 km of route to separate local traffic from longer distance trains on the busy Hamburg – Lübeck corridor, with grade separation of junctions and the elimination of level crossings.

The cost is now put at just over €1bn. The increase on a 2013 estimate of €630m is the result of more detailed studies, a 30% risk premium and additional noise reduction measures

How is the ridership to/from the Hafen City project? I visited Hamburg a year ago and the whole development seems promising however there were very few pedestrians and seemed deserted at times

Hard to say, if it's really elevated or still on the ground level...

HafenCity Universität is 16 m under ground level and the deepest underground station in Hamburg (and in Germany) is Messehallen with 26 m under ground level.

The HafenCity area is still under construction. Actually the population of HafenCity is about 2,000 people and there are 10,000 workplaces. Until 2025 workplaces will be increased up to 40,000 and the population will be about 5,500 people.

Have a look at this one:

The AKN received its first new diesel-powered units in a new livery:

The new trains will run between Hamburg-Eidelstedt and Neumünster, so the oldest diesel units of type VTE can be scrapped.

About the conversion of AKN to S-Bahn: Train intervals on Sundays will be doubled from 40 to 20 min. The plan-approval procedure will start this year and if everything went fine, electrified service will start by the end of 2019.

Hamburg adopts U-Bahn expansion plans
Wednesday, September 30, 2015

HAMBURG senator for economics Mr Frank Horch announced on September 29 that the Department of Economics, Transport, and Innovation (BWVI) will launch an initial public consultation on plans for a significant expansion of the city's U-Bahn network, which is intended to meet growing demand for public transport and support the city's bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games

Hamburg's Senate wants to use €72m in federal regional development funding to finance the next stage of planning. In order to complete preliminary design, detailed design, and planning approval, BWVI estimates it will need €15m for the extension of Line U4 to Elbbrücken and Kleiner Grasbrook; €15m for the eastern extension of Line U4 to Horner Geest; and €40m for the first phase of a completely new line, Line U5, which will link Bramfeld in the east with City Nord

Hamburg

University station is not deep. just -2 level including a mezzaine one.

the crossing of the Norderelbe bridge could be in the upper level of the existing road bridge, which was build to use for a possile later U-Bahn extension long ago. There steel panels to carry a second level.

Hamburg S-Bahn trains take shape
14 Dec 2015

GERMANY: The first of six pre-series dual-system EMUs for suburban operator S-Bahn Hamburg GmbH is expected to begin dynamic testing before the end of the year, according to manufacturer Bombardier.

The trains are being assembled at Bombardier’s Hennigsdorf plant north of Berlin under a €327m contract placed by S-Bahn Hamburg’s parent Deutsche Bahn in June 2013. This covers an initial 60 trains, with options for up to 86 more. The build of 60 is split into two batches, 29 being single voltage sets for use on the 1 200 V DC third rail S-Bahn routes, and the remaining 31 also equipped for use on the 15 kV 16·7 Hz main line network to facilitate the expansion of S-Bahn services
