BELGRADE:Arena is finished,new central train station to be completed in 2008

One of the biggest,probably the best and most beautiful indoor arena in Europe - Belgrade Arena -is finished.

Belgrade Arena, technological and building miracle 36 meters high. Great amount ofmoney has been invested in the construction of this 72,000 m2 hall, which was built toresemble the one in Chicago. The exact amount is not officially announced, but sum of30-60 million USD is mentioned. Sport complex consists of 3 levels, massage room, 12 locker rooms (of which 8 are forsportsmen and 4 are for referees and delegates), main phone exchange for 1200 lines, as well as equipment for TV broadcasting. The stands will be able to receive 20,000spectators. There are 60 boxes that are equipped with small parlor room, kitchen, toilet and 14 seats. There will also be 8 fast food restaurants at the same level. The Arena will host many sport events: basketball, boxing, volleyball, tennis, martial arts, handball, football, table tennis, gymnastics, equestrian sports, etc. The part of the stands will be movedduring the competitions, so that 6 athletic tracks could be in function. Arena will be equipped with up-to-date electronic appliances such as media cube that is suspended from the central ceiling of the hall and provides real enjoyment for all spectators with 4 side screens 23 meters wide. Roof fire alarm system, which wasdelivered from Germany for €1 million, resembles the one in the tunnel under the LaManche channel. Besides the big hall, the smaller hall is also being built on about 25,000 m2, and will be intended for trainings, recreation and related administrative works, along with thetwo-floor parking lot with 800 parking places for smaller vehicles and 25 for buses.Smaller hotels and premises for about 1,000 journalists, as well as trade center on 5,000m2 are also planned.

On the pre-qualification tender concluded yesterday, for the financing and developing commercial-business area and the main passenger railway station “Belgrade Center” (Prokop), thirteen potential partners and exponents for this investment answered the invitation. For the realization of the biggest investment project in South-Eastern Europe, worth over 200 million Euro, applied the biggest and most quality exponents from America, Israel, Czech Republic, Greece, France, Italy, Croatia, Austria, American-Greek company from Cyprus, as well as three Serbian companies, - said yesterday the General Manager of “Serbian Railways”, Milanko Sarancic, in his statement for the Media center of this enterprise.
- We can expect the contract to be signed with the exponent giving the best offer, already in October, and soon after that the works at Prokop could start. “Serbian Railways” foresaw the period of 36 months for the completion of the works at Prokop, but the companies that applied for this, mostly expressed the promptness to finish the whole work for 24 to 30 months, - emphasized Sarancic.
The pre-qualification tender was issued after eight months of preparations and with the consent of the Republic Government. In the next thirty days, “Serbian Railways” will issue the details of the conditions that will have to be made, regarding the prices and the terms of construction.
- We are very glad to have this kind of interest of foreign companies for investing in Belgrade and Serbia, because with this project “Serbian Railways” will achieve extremely important commercial and traffic effects, regarding the fact that the railway station Prokop is at Corridor 10, the most important railway line in the Republic. All the companies that applied for this project already proved, all over the world, to be very efficient, and the biggest interest was shown by the partners from America. All of this shows that Belgrade will have very important and valuable investment, said Sarancic.
According to his words, the first phase of the works includes the construction of the railway station Prokop, 120,000 square meters of business-residential area on the station area, 10,000 square meters of commercial area for the needs of the railway and infrastructure, which will be connecting the station to the other traffic lines. The second phase of the works would include the constructing approximately 150 to 170 thousand square meters of business premises.
By the completion of Belgrade Center and transferring of the main Belgrade Station on this location, we would free more than 80 acres of the most exclusive terrain in the city center, in the “Sava amphitheatre“, that would be offered to the investors in accordance with the market conditions. This would make the “Sava amphitheatre” the most important business, commercial, tourist and cultural center in this part of Europe(EUROPOLIS), as well as the very important source of incoms for Belgrade.The value of the whole project, according to the experts, is over 15 billion Dollars.


EUROPOLIS is an architectural urban design and a city-planning competition. It is a part of a large project of the same name dealing with the central town area between the "traditional" and "new" Belgrade that are separated by the Sava River and lies near its confluence with the Danube

EUROPOLIS is a continuation of the story about the urban space that has been treated as unique for centuries, but has always eluded town-builders and remained outside the city's mainstream activities.

Following a series of studies conducted by a large number of experts with various fields of expertise - architects and town planners - EUROPOLIS has become a new code word for the area.

The size of the EUROPOLIS site on which construction will take place is 114 ha. The expected floor area in the planned buildings to be constructed is approximately 2 million sq. m.

Since EUROPOLIS is envisaged as a business communication center in this part of Europe and as it lies at the crossroad of all the routes leading from Europe to Asia in the vicinity of the E-70/75 highway and on the route of the future high speed railway network through Serbia, as well as the Rhine-Main-Danube-Black Sea water and air corridors it is considered as one of the world's largest investment undertakings in the 21st century
