Out of curiosity, is the color of the expressway signs green or blue?

India's newly-built roads are good. Mumbai's eastern and western expressways are very impressive

But during my India visit, I feel the definitions of road and highway are different between India and China. China (like US) has a much stricter definition on these terms. i.e in China (and US), roads must be paved, mostly have divided lanes, national/state highways = access-controled 4 lanes+ expressways.

Mumbai - City Highway across Bay

Hi, today i saw an episode of Nat Geo Megacities on Mumbai in which an amazing highway across the sea/bay was being constructed.

Does anyone have any pics or links to updates on this project - i don;t know how old the TV show was?

Thanks,

Hey, I saw the same episode yesterday too, it was very interesting.
Unfortunately I can't find any recent pics either, there are some in this thread, but they are quite old (aug 2006).
This one is very nice:

From the looks of it, it seems like that highway will really change the city for the better.

folks, that is indeed an important project for Mumbai, although I would not call it a highway project, but more of a really long bridge project. Its called the Bandra-Worli Sea Link Project. I think it is still an year before the project is completed.

The Indian section has a thread here:

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=197468

In fact, we have a forum member who is an engineer working on the project!

Here are some newer pictures -

Updated pictures as on 6 February, 2007

You are right.

Actually, Unixer's reply is perfectly on the dot. In India there is no attempt to provide quality anywhere because those that will be left out will raise a hue and cry and force the spineless politicians to backtrack. In India the one with the loudest voice is usually paid heed to, and unfortunately they are not the progressive types.

india is doing a great job. investing in infrustructure is the key to the country's full development. once the bridges/roads get done, they'll be there for centuries to serve the country.

It appears, and please correct me if I'm wrong, that Delhi has a far superior transit system than Mumbai.

Highways, I would have to say yes, although it hurts my inner Mumbaikar...

this summer i realized when I went back that Mumbai is the only Indian city that is behind...its hard to find the turmoil and other negatives of Mumbai in other Indian cities...Delhi's change was stunning! We will see the same from mumbai too..it just willl take longer

BUT Mumbai has a very efficient (but brutal) bus and train system, which, if complemented with a metro and modernized, could be a beacon to the world.
