Lane discipline is getting better. Also, construction on the GQ road really picked up in 2008 compared to the slowdown over the past few years.

Chambal Cable Stayed Bridge: India's first-of-its-kind, State-of-the-Art Bridge to be ready by 2011

  • 350-metre span with axial suspension.
  • 6-lanes.
  • It is the first of its kind to be built in India.
  • a 700m cable stay structure (350m main span), and
  • two access viaducts, one on either side of the bridge, a total of 400 metres in length

Quote:
A new cable-stay bridge over river Chambal on NH-76 in Rajasthan is expected to be ready by 2011, officials of French firm Freyssinet, a leading contractor for the project, told Projectmonitor. The 1.4-km bridge is part of National Highways Authority of India's East-West Corridor. The bridge will connect the under-construction Kota Bypass (km 406 to km 381) project on one side and the four-laned Kota-Chittorgarh section (km 381 to km 361) on the other. Apart from improving connectivity within Rajasthan, the bridge would be a crucial to link neighbouring Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
Freyssinet said that casting of the main span had begun recently, and work on the two pylons and lateral spans was well underway. The cable-stay portion, being made in the “semi-fan” arrangement, will have a main span of 350m and two side spans of 175m each. The bridge will carry a six-lane vehicular deck, three for each direction. A 400m access bridge and a 300m approach road would also be part of the project.
Elaborating on its role, Freyssinet said that through it outfits Freyssinet Menard India Pvt. Ltd and Freyssinet International Company, it would supply and supervise two travelling formwork units for casting the main spans. Among other things, it would also be supplying and installing 80 permanent steel cables, between 50m and 190m in length, together containing 650,000m of strand length. The Freyssinet entities are acting as subcontractors to Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company Ltd which along with Gammon India Ltd constitutes the main contractor partnership. The bridge has been designed by Systra, a multinational engineering firm, based in France.
The bridge will deploy Freyssinet Compact Stay System incorporating Freyssinet’s proprietary cable damping system. This maximises the effective area of the stay while minimising wind effects, enabling cost saving reductions in pylon overall dimensions and steel content, Freyssinet observed. Freyssinet has been involved in a large number of cable-stay bridges worldwide including Millau (France), Rion-Antirion (Greece), Golden Ears (Canada) and Bai Chai (Vietnam), to name a few.
There are very few cable-stay bridges over rivers as far as NHAI's National Highway Development Programme goes. Speaking to Projectmonitor, V.K. Sharma, a senior NHAI spokesperson, said that the Naini bridge in Uttar Pradesh, connecting the cities of Naini and Allahabad along NH-27, was one such completed bridge. The bridge with a four-lane concrete deck was built between 2000 and 2004 as a “special project”, not belonging to a particular NHDP phase, he explained. The main contractor was a consortium between Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company Ltd of Korea and Hindustan Construction Company. Built over river Yamuna, the 1.5-km bridge, with a cable-stay portion of 630m, has a main span of 260m, less than that of the upcoming Chambal bridge

Compensation for the land owners by NHAI

Nowadays compensation provided to the farmers who are losing their land for highway widening and direction change must be awarded exact market price and not the guideline value provided by the state revenue authorities!
I welcome discussion on this subject on how to compensate the land owners who offer their precious land for public service and for the BOT company to profit much!
