They are wide, but I'm afraid many of them would not classify as expressway or motorway as they are defined. If you observe the pics closely, they are not bounded on the sides by railings. That is done so as to allow villagers to simply cross to the other side of the road to areas they have always traveled for decades, if not centuries. Peculiar, but this is India .

Oh yes that truck and the car facing each other was a shocker .

That's probably quite dangerous. Having people crossing a highway!! Probably some kind of underground foot subways to allow villagers to get to the other side would be quite good.

It's quite explicit in the States that pedestrians are not allowed on Interstate highways. But they would be quite rare anyway.
