you'll need to rebuild everything in 10-20 years when most families will have a car right?

Depends really..on whether in 20 years Indians will be buying cars or using mass transportation such as trains or local flights. Although with the sorry state of the train system the problem of a large number of cars hitting these highways will be a looming problem. Hopefully the railways will get their act together and people won't need to buy cars. It also looks like the highways can be expanded judging by the space around it.

This picture probably doesn't represent the entire system but why build with such a narrow median in a flat rural area? It would be easier to expand in the future if they had a nice wide median.

Here highways generally have narrow medians to avoid land acquisition problems. A short sighted approach because sooner or later you will need to face this problem again when you need to expand further.

By looking at these pics... I see that unfortunately Mexico is not the only country to have that lack of planning: in a good part of the non-toll Mexican highway network we have that problem: those sudden entries and exits (including unexpected tiny unpaved entries from nearby rural properties)... hopefully some day authorities will understand that those are NOT real highways and can change it. last year during a European event, when I asked a representative from the Mexican Ministry of Transport and Communications why this has happened and when they are planning to change it he couldn't answer and only pointed out "oh, you can send your inquiry through our website". I did it, but I have not received any response yet.

India needs to develop standardized signage.
