Well, according to this wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_signs_in_India, the road signs in India follow the British system of road signages, albeit bilingual. So every state will havetheir road signs in English and in their regional language. To be honest though, a lot of the road signs don't follow the British system at all!

It's been finished for a while now. They didn't actually open it to all traffic yet, there were still some issues to resolve.

Warning and restriction signs are based on the British system to a reasonable degree. Directional signage bears hardly any similarity at all. Except that I saw some signage in Madhya Pradesh that reminded me of the British signage of the pre-Warboys days.

I am not aware of any attempts to unify the directional signs of the various states and territories. Getting the route numbers changed throughout the nation is already turning into a major challenge. I don't want to know where a change in directional signs would bring us.

It's basically a massive issue that seems to not be getting the importance it requires. Private contractors like the "Jaypee group" who built the Yamuna expressway seem to have done a good job with regards to the signages. It just differs from contractor to contractor and how lax they are at signages. Anyway, no one seems to follow or even bother to look at these signages in the first place!

The signs at the Yamuna Expressway look very reasonable indeed. But from my own travels through India, I also recall instances where national highways intersected without any signposting or only with signposting that was pretty much useless. I might say that, where a route is concessioned to a contractor, there is at least directional signage. It may not always look good, but you'll eventually get the message. Where roads are maintained by a state, it already becomes more of a guess. And where roads are maintained by a city, you're often pretty much left to your own devices.

On my own travels from Varanasi to the West, I do not recollect any signage of the intersection between NHs 7 and 76 to bring us onto the route to Khajuraho. And travelling West from Khajuraho, I mostly recall entering Chattarpur, where a huge gantry pointed to the intersection with NH75. But it came kilometers down the line, and the driver was pretty much left to his own devices in working out which crossing to take.

I know what you mean! I had similar instances with regards to my travels in the South of India. The thing is that signages vary widely across the country, from North to South and similarly from East to West.

Once again, the deadline is not met. I don't know what's keeping them from opening the expressway, it's been finished for a year now. The first announced opening date was August 2011.

State govt. is deliberately delaying its opening - petty politics.
