Thanks for all the pictures of various highways and some expressways in India, Abhishek901.
As per the following references, the Government of India plans to add an additional 18,637 km (11,580 mi) of expressways to the network by the year 2022. Would you know if there's been any update on that number? references: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Expressways http://www.dnaindia.com/money/report...ore-km_1381235 |

My experience of driving on some of India's highways and even on a few expressways is that all traffic rules are followed while the traffic density is low enough so that all cars can move at or slightly greater than the posted speed limit. In many of the previous pictures posted, you see vehicles following the traffic rules. However, when the traffic density increases and vehicles are forced to slow down substantially, those drivers use every lane available and subvert some traffic rules just to get ahead. There are some exceptions, though, such as the Mumbai - Pune Expressway where I saw all vehicles obey traffic rules and they stuck to their lanes even when traffic was very heavy. Perhaps others can throw further light on this. (1) I believe more strict and frequent policing of all India's highways and expressways would help resolve this issue. (2) Also, the criteria for the driving test to obtain a driver's license in India need to be stricter. As more vehicles flood India's massive highway (and growing expressway) network, implementation of these two points will become increasingly important. |

In the U.S., lane discipline is pretty good. But even here, it seems that most people are ignorant about how the passing lane works. On the expressway, folks will overtake on both sides. Many will just stay in the innermost passing lane and not allow others to overtake.

Do each road in India keep its own road signage design, or is there some kind of national or state standards?

What's the speed limit on these new motorways? 80? 90? 100? 110? Do people go as fast as the speed limit allows or do they go much slower?
And India being India, I assume that most people don't bother to wear helmets or seat belts? |

And yes, sadly very few obey the law and wear helmets or seat belts. In some cities it's mandatory to weal helmets and seat belts. So 99% of the people wear it as they don't want to pay a heavy fine($10 dollars).
