TORINO: the new ARCH FOOTBRIDGE

September 2005 - Arch Footbridge -
ARCH FOOTBRIDGE FOR THE TURIN 2006 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES

On 25th September will be erected the big steel arch that will suspend by mean of steel wire ropes the pedestrian footbridge connecting the international area of the Olympic Village with the exhibition area of Lingotto overstanding the railway Lingotto station.

The pedestrian and cycleable footbridge 320 metres long, designed by the architect Hugh Dutton and Camerana & Partners office, will be suspended by this 65 metres high guyed arch, of red painted steel guyed with 38 FLCR full locked coil ropes diameter 55 mm and 75 mm with lengths between 20 and 130 metres each and stabilized with 3 FLCR full locked coil ropes diameter 60 mm and 163 metres long.

The footbridge, with its huge red painted arch, is not only necessary to connect the area of the former Food General Market and the Lingotto commercial centre, but is also a symbol for Torino, host city of the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

Tensoteci, the engineering division of Redaelli, will be active part during the erection of the arch and the tensioning of the cables with the companies Falcone and Sermeca.

The erection of the arch will be done using two giant mobile cranes of 450 tons lifting capacity and controlled by a strain jacks system.

The arch will immediately be secured in its final position by the anchorage of some mast guys properly set up by an accurate oleodynamic equipment.

The successive installation and tensioning of all the mast guys and of the stabilizing ropes, fully organized by Tensoteci, will be done using high pressure oleodynamic equipment, each of 320 tons capacity; 6 of such equipment will work simultaneously.

The division Cordati of Redaelli already finished in its Gardone Valtrompia factory the production, the connection of the end terminations, the prestretching and the marking under load of all the needed steel wire cables.
