Monas
a short form of Monumen Nasional

The Monumen Nasional (or Tugu Monas, the National Monument tower) is a 137m tall tower in Central Jakarta, symbolizing the fight for Indonesia's Independence.

Visitors can take a lift up to a platform with a good view on Medan Merdeka Park, Istiqlal Mosque and the city (if it's not too foggy); inside the base of the monument is an exhibition of the declaration of independence and several dioramas showing the history of Indonesia.

History

Its construction began in 1961 under Sukarno and not finished until 1975 under Suharto. It's topped by a 14.5 tonnes of flame-shaped bronze plated in 35kg of gold.

A Bellagio Hotel-style fountain just installed in Monas this year

Many events took place at Monas Park (also known as Istana Park) such as:

Is it true that during Soeharto's time, no building can be built taller than Monas?

i dun think its true coz BNI 46 building was built during soeharto's era and definitely it's higher than monas

According to encon's post...it was built by Sukarno, but finished during Suharto
