Pictures are from the city of Thessaloniki, Vergina, Mount Athos, Chalkidiki, and Kastoria.

I hope you enjoy these magical parts of Greece:

Thanks Raleigh!

Believe it or not, I have a friend who went through very tough times in life and started to become influenced by some people in the church (well, brainwashed is more like it, as he was in a low point of his life) and he ended up spending 6 years at mount Athos living in a cave! His own mother could not even see him! He is now out......

Leafs first of all thank you for these amazing photos!!!!
Especially the photo of Hydra class frigate at the port of Thessaloniki!!

I disagree with the way you presented the story about your friend and the expressions you used (brainwashed).
For many people it is a bless to go to a monastery and not a curse like you presented it.
thank you and sorry for this intervention.

Hello Geroplatanos.

Although I respect your opinion, it is my fault for not presenting the entire story. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "brainwashed". There is much more to this story and due to respect for this person's privacy I cannot give details. Let's just put it this way, this individual is easily influenced by both good and bad sources and his decision to go to Mount Athos was greatly "pushed" on him by others. Whether it was a good or bad decision to go, only he knows in his heart. What I do know is that since leaving one year ago, he has not spoken to his mother again and has not come back to Toronto to visit his family and friends once.

Leafs, sad to hear about your "brainwashed" friend. Nothing wrong with saying things the way they are. It is one thing to become a monk because you felt so, it is another thing to be pushed/brainwashed by some people who actually believe this would solve your problems. If I had a chance to go to a Shaolin monastery and study Kung-Fu, I would gladly do so; I would not become a Buddist monk for the rest of my life - no I am not a Buddist.

Anyway, there are many great things about the Greek monasteries and your friend's experience is not the norm. One of the things I liked about the monasteries, besides the quiet environment, is their "urbanity" and high-density. Man, I could never live in those small cells; I need at least 2000 square feet
