Bangkok is Asia's 4th busiest airport

Singapore (dpa) - Asia's top performing airport in passenger and cargo traffic is Tokyo's Haneda handling more than 65 million passengers last year, data from the Airports Council International (ACI) said on Tuesday.

Beijing, Hong Kong and Bangkok followed, all ahead of Singapore, which has shown slower growth.

Tokyo's passenger traffic was a modest increase of 3 per cent over the previous year, said the ACI's findings published in The Straits Times.

The Montreal-based ACI said Beijing's passenger traffic jumped 18.3 per cent to 48.5 million, the highest increase among all airports that made it to the top 30 ranking list.

As in previous years, US airports took the top spots internationally. Atlanta International Airport handled 84.8 million passengers, the highest number.

Hong Kong's passenger traffic hit 44 million, up from 40.3 million in 2005, and Bangkok's 42.8 million rose from 39 million the previous year.

Reflecting the regional competition, Singapore's Changi emerged fifth in Asia with passenger traffic at 35 million, an 8 per cent increase over 2005.

Tokyo's Narita followed with 31.9 million passengers, edging up from 31.5 million.

Singapore is competing with other aspiring hub airports including Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Dubai, analysts said.

Transport Minister Raymond Lim told parliament that Singapore will continue to push for more liberal skies to unshackle airlines from the many restrictions they now face when adding new flights and capacity on routes.

Singapore is also seeking to persuade new carriers to fly to the city-state.

Thanks for the job.

Can't believe that the first south american is ranked as #82.
São Paulo is among the 4 world greatest cities and only have 16 million passengers/year.

OF COURSE NOT!!!!!!!!!!!
The thing is that São Paulo has two airports. If you consider the traffic both in Congonhas Int´l Airport (18.5m) and in Guarulhos Int´l Airport (16.6m), the total number of passengers for São Paulo is 35.1 million.

By the way, Brasilia International Airport would surely be among the top 150: it handled almost 10 million passengers in 2006.

Frankfurt is actually the Lufthansa hub. I believe Munich is also a major one as well. Strangely, Berlin doesn't get a lot of long-haul flights at all.

Jeez, China and Indias airports are all well in double figures for growth, I suspect that they will feature heavily in the top 20 in this list in, say 10 years time.

Though as for city combos NY, Tokyo and London rule the roost for now,

LDN - 125.4 mppa (not including LTN and TCY which I guess would add another 10 mppa)

NYC - 103.8 mppa

TOK - 97 mppa

I know that, but Congonhas is a "domestic" airport actually. Even consider both, is clear that there is a lack of federal investments.
