I guess though that this is mostly due to the effect of the TGV.
Looking at the number of passengers on Madrid-Barcelona, it looks clearly that the AVE in Spain didn't have the same impact as the TGV in France.
No one would take the plane between Paris and Lyon anymore, even from Paris to Marseille (700kms, 3 hours), the # of passengers have dropped dramaticaly
Maybe that is changing between Madrid and Barcelona as this recent BBC article shows:

Since a couple of months these taxes don't excist anymore, but the people who lives at the border are still flying from Germany. Because the Germans did a good marketing, by advertising in local Dutch newspapers, introduce Dutch signings at sum German airports and Dutch speaking staffpersonels.

And then the Thalys from Schiphol. The cheapest singleticket from Schiphol to Paris Gare du Nord is 25 Euro. It's the easies way to reach the Paris centre. The Thays is also on the route of two large Dutch cities, The Hague and Rotterdam. Within a couple of months the highspeedrailway in the Netherlands increase their speed up to 300km/h. So Amsterdam CS-Paris GDN wil proxibly take 3 hours with the TGV.
uh...the tax within europe (>2500 km) was 11 euro and the flights <2500 km (intercontinental) were not 25 euro but 45 euro p.p. but thank god they've decided to get rid of it....it was just cashing more money for the dutch government..

I find it unexpected that Warsaw is so far down that list as it is a main financial centre, an Alpha City and Poland has a large expat population. I thought it would at least make top 20..

Actually i am confused, how is it possible that Palma de Mallorca has more traffic then DUS and MXP, aswell as AYT is higher than DUS, just impossible... Moscow DME last year had 20 million, now it shows 15 mln (although u put a mark), seems like not really correct, but its by ACI, then it cant be so.

Don't you believe me?
You can see by yourself. I used the correct fonts.

PMI had more traffic than DUS and MXP, many months ago.
Turkish airports are growing in crisis times, while the most part of airports in Europe are dropping.

I expect 18 millions in DME with August data, following AYT probably.

Thank you for the fresh update RdL. It seems like ESB, ADB will steadily keep growing as the both have newer terminals (Although ADB might need a new terminal again soon.) SAW should get huge extremely soon as the new terminal will be ready at the end of the month. AYT and IST will need new terminals to grow further IMHO. AYT will introduce a new Domestic Terminal this year; which could increase its passengers numbers slightly, however it's in dire need of a new Int'l Terminal. IST on the other hand is currently going through some rennovations and expansion, but nothing major. It might expand enough to be in the top 6 at this point, however top 5 seems unreachable for now...

You are welcome.

I've updated the list with the traffic figures for russian airports.

DME is following AYT like I've expected.

Also I remarked the variations for Top 50 respect last update.

Very interesting.
In July 2009, there has been more passengers using trains than planes on Madrid-Barcelona.
I guess the future numbers will drop dramatically on this route.

I think that's good. Train for short-medium distance (less than 1000kms), plane for longer distance. A 2,5 hours journey from city center to city center should give a master advantage to the train, that is faster from city center to city center. If you compare with France where the TGV is already long installed, it should give a 70-80% of shared market for train in long term.

PMI is a hub airport of Air Berlin (2nd largest airline in Germany - 146 planes + 132 ordered)
Air Berlin is flying from Germany to PMI and then to other airports in Spain.
So AB is the largest non-spain airline "in" Spain
AB got over 380 flights from german Airports to PMI a week (55 Flights a day)

I flew 2 times with Air Berlin - to Ibiza and Malaga
both routes were: Fra - Pmi - Ibiza (nice 15 min flight from pmi to ibiza )
Fra - Pmi -Malga
So Air Berlin is usually flying german tourists from Germany to "Malle" Pmi and in Palma they pick up spanish tourists and fly them back to airports in Spain.
btw when i was in Pmi i felt like in Germany, cause there ist one part of the terminal, where all AB Flights are boarding.
...and there are like 20 AB 737 in one row

edit:

Not bad, I have a different music taste, but it's still nice
However, I guess it'be nicer if you synchronised photos with the airport name. I'm not an expert, but it seems like sometimes there are different airports with different clips.
Thanks for sharing though
