If that happens, should both cities have at least three airports to accommodate even more passengers and cargo? I mean, building one massive airport with a very large capacity can cost so much money, especially in terms of managing and maintaining the entire facility...

Beijing I see reaching 90M by 2017 but Dubai.. maybe in 2018/2019? Also I think Istanbul is reaching top 10 very quickly.

@fieldsofdreams: hopefully next year we will see many new airports in 10+, this year probably KWI and UGP will join 10+
MNL released statistics until November, but if you could find data for other Philippines airports it would be great!

Very interesting.. see how PEK, DXB and CGK all of a sudden appears out of nowhere .. and a few getting dropped off

Plot this/ something similar for the top 50 or 100 and one can potentially see how a new world economic order emerges as the 21st century progresses...

Exciting analysis as always, thanks bubbalo

Calgary International (YYC) just posted PAX of 15,261,108 for 2014, an increase of 6.6%. Toronto Pearson (YYZ) is slow to report yet again.

Does anyone know where I can dig to find tables on busiest 50 airports by passengers over the decades? 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 would be great. I imagine it would be dominated by US airports but I'd be interested to see how other airports stacked up.

I would be very interested to see a comparison of Toronto and Montreal airport passenger/aiport stats from the 1950s to the present day if possible.

Finally this is the time when most of the airports released their statistics for 2014 so I can publish some of my statistics.

In 2013 i have collected passenger data from more than 1400 airports which had at least 100 000 passengers. So far in 2014 i have data for roughly 1100 airports (mostly missing airports from US, China, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Carribean), however major airports around the world are covered.

In the first table you can see top 50 airport in 2014 (CGK numbers are estimated, MNL numbers based on current growth). The most rapid growth expericend SZX with 12,4%, mainly due to new terminal opening at the end of 2013, followed by CTU with 12,15% and TPE with 11,2%. In case of absolute numbers the winner is IST with additional 5 657 000 over 2013, followed by PVG with 4 461 951 passengers.
BKK along with CGK are the only airports in top 50 who experienced negative growth, mainly due to political unrest in Thailand.
Also in the table you can see comparism with years 2004 and 1996 and their rank by then.

In the second table can be seen top 50 airports in 1987 (this is how much further i can go, because numbers before 1987 are inconsistent). Suprisingly there is a lot of airports which they did not make it even in top 100 in 2014 (PIT, MEM, STL) due to dehubbing by major american airlines.

So far since the beginning of aviation there is only 18 airports which handled more than 5 mil passengers in single month. Unfortunately there is no new airport to join in 2014. MAD is far from its numbers back in 2007, also for BKK will take some time since the relocation of some airlines to DMK and political situation in Thailand. I am though very confident about PVG and CAN to enter +5 mil club airports this year (both thanks to new runways opens)

Graph below shows selected airport and their passenger movements on 12-months rolling period. Major disruption event can be seen as well.

In 2014 167 airports handled more than 10 mil passngers, 11 more than previous year. Majority of the airport are from North America (US, Canada and Mexico), Europe and Asia. Comparing to numbers from 2000 and 1995 Asian airports seen huge growth over the years.

In following graph you can see passenger development on airports using only one runway. This chart dominates LGW with more than 38 mil passengers served. Second SAW might actually threaten LGW in couple of years if the current growth is maintained and no further expansion.

This graph shows top 10 airports according to 2014 figures + JFK. For those airports i was able to collect data. There are 2 interesting points i want to mention. First, ATL almost surpassed ORD back in 1981, but ORD kept no. 1 position untill 1996. Second point, JFK was at the time being second busiest airport in the world and most probably once even first. BTW if somebody could explain sudden drop of ATL in 1991 i would appreciate it very much!

In recent year IST (if we consider this airport european) has build up into one of the busiest airport in Europe. It has two more years before new airport will be open, to show us how high it can grow. I personally think it could be second busiest by end of 2016 but it would be tough race.

This would be all for now with my analysis but i will soon prepare information about busiest cities served as well as international statistics.

I tried to dig up those figures but it seems very difficult. Most of the airport does not provide the data if asked (mostly US airports) and most of them claims they do not have those old statistics available. However i have a list of airports going back to 1965, i will try to extract the numbers and post them here

Thanks very much. It's much appreciated. That 1987 table was an eye opener.

All right... sit tight, folks... I've found (most of) the data for Manila (MNL):

>> Terminal 1 Statistics
>> Terminal 2 Statistics
>> Terminal 3 Statistics
>> Terminal 4 Statistics

Add the overall passenger flow from both international and domestic services on all terminals, and you will get a rough picture of how MNL performed in 2014. It also has historical data up from 2010 for comparison.

The problem with MNL is they release statistics 3 times 4 times a year, hopefully December will be released soon

Could you dig up somewhere statistics for other Philippines airports? Davao? Clark? Maybe in local news ?
