Its interesting to see China's inland cities finally becoming more connected to the rest of the world by direct flights.

At this point, China has become the country with the second largest number of cities with intercontinental/long haul flights in the World, just after the US. And it will probably become first in the next decade as China's air passengers will only continue to grow despite economic cycles.

By the end of Nov,

FRA has 56,935,002
IST has 56,827,312.

About 107,000 pax difference, less than half of day of work.

IST will probably overtake FRA this December.

Incredible growth for IST, but I wonder if a slowing economy and capacity constraints will be a problem for IST in the future.

This is why the third Istanbul airport is currently under construction, aiming to be a global hub, with initial capacity 90 million pax and able to reach 150 million if needed.
So being more anchored in the global traffic rather than domestic one, it will probably be less affected by national economy.

As far as I know, IST is scheduled to be closed during 2017 or 2018, during one big shift of airlines to the new airport.

But will it open on time? From what I've seen of the progress, it looks like it might take 5 more years to build an airport of that size. If they can open it by 2018, TK will have 7 years to capitalize on EK's slowing growth since DXB is capacity constrained.

You probably know more about building at such 'Middle Eastern' scale and speed.
Let me also tell you what I know. Recently they've installed a concrete production facility on site, so that in 2016 they will have a 1,000 cubic meters/hour efficiency.

They've started working on the foundations, so 2-3 years is not such a long period, to build, fit and open the airport. There are 5 or 6 big companies involved in it, with hundreds of subcontractors, with governmental support, so lots of interests to finish and open it as soon as possible.

I have doubts though, about the mass transportation system it will involve. They should have started working on it already.

Even if it will be delayed for 1-2 years, I think it won't be a tragedy, for a project of this scale and importance. I just wish it will rise to our expectations of quality, to be a truly global hub and benchmark for other such projects.

Another interesting one: when will AMS (by the end of Nov: 53.994.422) overtake FRA...?! Growth in Nov 2015 vs Nov 2014 8.8%.

Impressive for AMS. But FRA's growth has been limited by the night flights ban and LH's split hub operation. If LH was only based at FRA, then FRA would be the busiest airport in Europe.

Atlanta is world's first airport to hit 100 million passengers in year

The day has come

Passenger Larry Kendrick, middle, speaks next to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Manager Miguel Southwell (right) at a ceremony naming Kendrick the airport's 100 millionth passenger on Dec. 27, 2015. (Photo: Kent D. Johnson/Atlanta Journal-Constitution via AP)

"The worldís busiest airport says it has become the first in the world to top a major passenger milestone.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport counted its 100 millionth passenger on Sunday morning, something that the airport says makes it the first airport in the world to ever serve that many passengers in a single calendar year.
Atlantaís airport even went so far as to estimate when the 100 millionth passenger would arrive. Officials tabbed Larry Kendrick Ė a customer on an arriving Delta flight from Mississippiís Gulfport/Biloxi International Airport Ė as the milestone passenger."
