A few years ago AMS was afraid to be overtaken by MAD and FCO. Something has changed here....

Schiphol has been taken over by MAD for a few years in the mid 00's. The financial crisis obviously had a bigger impact in Spain than in the Netherlands however.

MAD is a big transit location for S America from all of Europe and if S America starts growing again so will MAD. My favourite EU transit airports are Mad and Ams as the non schengen transits like me are handled very very efficiently in both.

AMS has recently grown LCC traffic like Ryanair and new direct Asian routes bypassing IST and DBX transits plus the Dutch economy is pretty good like Deportivo said.

EDIT Spain also has the worlds second biggest high speed rail network now which displaced a lot of internal flights from 2008 onwards. Train beats plane on a 500km long sector every time. Planes need over 60 mins flight time @800kph to catch a 250kph train city centre to city centre.

The cost of HSR tickets in Spain is fairly reasonable overall.

MAD has a "big" problem: the AVE (Spanish High Speed Train).
Now, from Madrid you can go to many Spanish cities and some French cities by AVE, so many people is not taking the plane anymore.

For example:
The air shuttle from Madrid to Barcelona had almost 100 flights daily between both cities. After the AVE construction, by 2007, there are only 10 flights in the air shuttle...

This is a decrease of milions of passengers for MAD airport.

100 RVD Aeroporto de Rio Verde-GO...................... 13.745 Anac......... +5
101 BYO Aeroporto de Bonito-MS......................... 11.518 Anac......... -

Podemos perceber que:

Os aeroportos que tiveram maiores subidas de posição:
+15 URG Uruguaiana quadriplicou o movimento devido a implantação de linhas regulares;
+12 SJP S.José Campos movimentou mais de 45% a mais que em 2015 (mas vai cair porquê perdeu os voos);
+12 UNA Una-Comandatuba praticamente dobrou em relação a 2015;
+9 JJG Jaguaruna vem consolidando sua posição com o voo da LATAM;
+6 TXF Teixeira de Freitas já movimentou mais que a metade de 2015;
+6 JDO Juazeiro do Norte já movimentou mais que a metade de 2015;
+5 IZA Zona da Mata já movimentou mais que a metade de 2015, consolidando a mudança para o novo aeroporto;
+4 CPV Campina Grande já movimentou mais que a metade de 2015;
+3 BPS Porto Seguro já movimentou mais que a metade de 2015.
Os aeroportos da Bahia tem crescido além 2015, acredito ser devido ao turismo interno.

Maiores quedas de posição:
-5 ATM Altamira teve queda de mais de 33% em comparação com 2015, muito devido a finalização das obras em Belo Monte;
-6 TJL Três Lagoas caiu mais de 65% em relação a 2015;
-9 BVH Vilhena teve uma queda de 45% em relação a 2015;
-11 PLU Pampulha teve queda de mais de 50% em comparação com 2015, devido aos cortes de voos;

Obrigado.

Based on the current growth rate MAD should finish this year above 50 million.

ICN for the first time above 5 million for a single month in July: 5,283,736 +44,7%
CUN also with a new monthly record passing 2 million for the first time in July: 2,137,473 +10,4%
Bangkok DMK continues to grow with more than 20% in July and passing 3 million for the first time in July: 3,098,909 +20,2%

I doubt that. Even if AMS keeps 10% growth for the rest of the year it would end up with just above 64 mil passengers. If CDG would end up with 1% or 2% decrease it would still be more than AMS. Next year mate, next year

There is plenty of records broken in July, I will post them as soon as all data are released. Just small note on DMK, it reached 3 mil passengers back 2000 and 2001 (most probably also in 1997) with the maximum of 3 472 530
passengers in Aug-00

But this was the time when Don Mueang International was firmed under the IATA code "BKK". Now the Suvarnabhumi International Airport has the IATA-Code BKK and Don Mueang International changed from BKK to DMK in 2006. Before 2006 there was no airport with IATA-Code DMK.

Yes sure, but it was the airport itself handling the amount of passengers not the IATA code of the airport...
Current DMK handled 3.5 mil passengers back in 2000, prevoiusly known as BKK

The growth of AMS (and lack of growth of CDG) has one and one only explanation: Air France-KLM. Due to strikes at CDG and backward Air France unions, Air France-KLM has increasingly transferred routes from Air France to KLM, which means from CDG to AMS. That's pretty obvious in East Africa and South-East Asia. Air France-KLM, despite being headquartered at CDG, has definitely decided to favor KLM over Air France, which means AMS over CDG.

Many people in Paris are complaining about it. Lots of the new AMS traffic is in fact French traffic. Unfortunately, as long as Hollande and the Socialists are in power, the situation won't change. If the French Right comes back to power next year, this could change quickly as they will legislate against the unions, and they won't accept much longer that Air France-KLM favors KLM to the detriment of Air France and Paris.

In a sign that times are changing, the union leader who ripped the shirt of Air France's human ressources chief at CDG in October 2015 has been FIRED! The French labor minister had to give her approval, since the guy was a union leader, and she gave it, which was pretty unexpected coming from a Socialist government!

AMS is very close to official maximum capacity because of noise regulations. Schiphol expects to reach that maximum next year instead of the planned 2020.

Air France and KLM should definitely split up in the near future. KLM should leave all the strikes and union shit in France, and a bit healthier growth rate for KLM and AMS doesn't hurt either.

I disagree about the only reason being AF/KLM. In recent years Schiphol Airport has allowed, and even embraced, the LCC companies like Easyjet, Ryanair, Wizzair. While CDG and FRA still do some good old protectionism.

Another reason is that KLM has replaced noisy aircraft like MD11 and B747 with B787. This allowes for more flights.

This will obviously not happen. Remember that KLM was almost dead and brought back to life when bought by AF.

Erka made a point about noise restrictions too. Retiring 747s and replacing them with A350s can have a beneficial effect. Have a graphic. Traffic growth in AMS in recent years was net noiseless.

Not to say the hard limit wont't drop but it has been managed in recent years.
