The "muslim" world is quite heterogenous and the risks in the Emirates or Morocco where the states are functionnal and all public services work, are definitely not the same as in failed states like Irak or Libya or in countries where the public services were destabilised by the uprisings like Egypt or Tunisia or even Turkey, where the recent jailing of thousands of public servants may have created gaps in the security services...
Sadly this mixing up of everything is quite common whenever we speak about MENA.
Thank you for your response. By the way, a lot of westerners are completely ignorant of other regions but you shouldn't assume all westerners are. Sometimes a question is just a question and a means to filling in some blanks.

I see that in the list quite a few German airports are missing (also the German airport association ADV Aero hasn't published the 2016 stats of its member airports yet).

So here are some more major German airports with their passenger data for 2016 (2015 in brackets):

Düsseldorf (DUS): 23.5 million (22.5 million)
Hamburg (HAM): 16.2 million (15.6 million)
Cologne-Bonn (CGN): 11.9 million (10.3 million)
Stuttgart (STR): 10.6 million (10.5 million) +1.1%
Hannover (HAJ): 5.4 million (5.45 million)

All data from the websites of the respective airports.
Further airports to be considered for the list: Bremen (BRE), Dortmund (DTM), Dresden (DRS), Hahn (HHN) Leipzig/Halle (LEJ), Nuremberg (NUE), Weeze (NRN).

Spain is obviously seeing the benefits as it's classed as a much safer option, shorter flight and good climate!
A lot of tourism to Spain has been diverted from Egypt and Turkey, from Egypt alone Spain has recieved something on the order of 10 million extra tourists the last 5-6 years. Then you add Turkey and Tunisia and the number goes up to 13-14 millions extra tourists over last 5 years. 2016 alone saw around 4 million extra tourists because of MENA turmoil.

When you look at regions of Spain that don't have beach and sun as their main attraction, tourism has actually gone down, particullary in northern Spain but also in the interrior.

Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt will eventually bounce back and they will recover those tourists that now go to Spain, so the current situation will only last until the situation improve in MENA.

Basically MENA turmoil saved Spanish tourism industry during the great recession when it grew from 52 million tourist in 2010 to 75 in 2016 despite Spain having record unemployment and the economy going backwards for years.

LAX reached the 80 million passengers benchmark in 2016!

Quote:

As we work to improve #LAX we saw a 3rd straight record year of passengers in 2016, with 80.9 million travelers passing through.✈️
https://twitter.com/MayorOfLA/status/819302613166342145

80.9 million passengers for the year, of course we still need the official figures from bubbalo

(and as an aside, as someone who has gone in and out of LAX a lot recently, that airport is REALLY starting to get pushed to its seams. In lieu of Ontario/John Wayne/Burbank become a larger airport, the LAX renovations can't be completed fast enough imo.)

Although the South African airport statistics have not been finalised yet, the 3 major airports are all expected to have reached new milestones putting them into the next category:

JNB surpassing 20 million
CPT surprassing 10 million (10millionth passenger celebrated on 28 Dec)
DUR surpassing 5 million

Hi guys,

I know many of you are interested in full year figures but the time hasn't come yet even though some irregular updates are posted in this forum. Some of the airports hasn't released Nov statistics yet (latest stats of MNL are from August, IAH is taking some time to release Nov, and of course there is no surprise with YYZ) so I used my estimation.

Couple of interesting moments for November:
LAX became 4th airport in the world to handle more than 80 million passengers in 12-months period
MAD bounced back to 50 million plus classification
DEL (India in total) isn't stopping with amazing growth and creating new monthly record

Something around 10.5 to 10.75 could be possible for 2016.

Congonhas (CGH) at an all-time high, handling 20,773,935 passengers in 2016.

Both Guarulhos (GRU) and Viracopos (VCP) lost ground with the crisis, and São Paulo Terminal ended the year with 67 million passengers handled.
