Wait a minute... on bubbalo's list, San Francisco International Airport, Oakland, and San Jose are not shown.

Here are the data:
- San Francisco (November 2016)
- San Jose (November 2016)
- Oakland (December 2016)

The Aviation Pros data is hot off the wire. So hot, the SFO website doesn't have it posted yet. But it's full year.

Do the above stats exclude transit passengers at some airports? I note that total Passenger numbers for Auckland, New Zealand at the end of December 2016 were actually 18,299,158, according to their latest monthy stats... the difference being transit passengers of 657,340.

Not deliberately. Otherwise Dubai would be level with Birmingham.

Airports like Atlanta, Chicago, London Heathrow will be far down the list if that was true.

Definitely not. You're probably confusing transit with transfer passengers.

Great growth for LAX this year but low for ORD. I doubt we will ever see ORD ahead of LAX ever again unless UA, AA, F9 or NK expand operations there but that doesn't look like it will be the case anytime soon. Gate space, especially at T5 is a problem, but I believe they are working on improving the gate shortage at T2 and T5 with the announced expansion.

I've always used transit and transfer interchangeably. Never realized there was a difference. But after further research, here is the difference:

Quote:
In a nut shell, both transfer and transit require intermediate stops, but depending on the next flight (aircraft or airline) become either of one. Transit passengers use the same airline all along, and stop at intermediate destination for 1-2 hours for cleaning or fueling and board on the same aircraft to get to the final destination.

Transfer passengers, however, take separate aircraft or even airline and boarding time may differ depending on the airline.

http://mypincake.com/en/content/transit
So it appears that most airports handle transfer passengers not transit.

As for spongebob's statement, I think he is about right. DXB is about 35-40% O&D traffic, and if DXB was not a big transfer hub, would put it at the same level as Sao Paulo, Doha and Xi'an.

At the end of the day they're both counted as passengers at that airport whether they use the same plane or a different one.

Back to my point, Auckland passenger stats should be 18,299,158, which includes transfer & transit passengers not 17,641,818 which excludes transfer & transit passengers...

What a fantastic list though, thanks for posting, there is a common theme and that is GROWTH!!...long may it continue.

Yes and no. They're both counted as passenger but a transfer passenger is counted twice. So the difference DOES matter for air traffic statistics.

New data for Maceio Zumbi dos Palmares International Airport, in Brazil: 1,995,069 passengers in 2016.

Infraero (the Brazilian public airports authority) has updated its final numbers for 2016.

If you're interested, the busiest O&D airport in the world is LAX, and has held that title for many years I believe (Wikipedia Source). It makes sense I think, like bubbalo's charts show LAX is 4th busiest airport worldwide and Los Angeles is not a big transit hub really. Transfers there are mostly domestic flights going to Hawaii, and international travelers from East Asia and Oceania arriving in the country and going on to somewhere else in the US.
While I've read LAX is number 1, I don't know any other rankings. I'm really curious though, I may go on an internet sleuthing mission to find out

If your plane refuels mid route you are a single count transit in the stats whether you leave the plane or not. If you change planes (Dubai model) you are a transfer passenger and counted twice as an arrival and as a departure
