Just wanted to pipe in and say I agree with you re: LAX, fantastic growth for the airport! Nearly 8 percent growth is the second most in the top 10, after PVG, more than DXB, and is MUCH more growth than any comparable US airport. It's great to see the growth of travel in the region and hopeful it portends good economic news for the L.A. area. Unfortunately though, all this rapid growth is happening in the middle of some major renovations to the airport, and the growing pains will be tough for a few years. But I think in the end the airport will come out the other side as a much better facility and will be able to shed its mostly negative reputation among frequent flyers.
It'll be interesting to see how long LAX can continue growing at this rate. I don't know if 8 percent is sustainable, but barring a recession, a return to high oil prices or general Trump "issues", I'm pretty sure LAX will reach 90 million passengers/year by 2020 at the latest. And I believe LAWA's original long term projections had LAX hitting 100 million/year by 2040, somehow I think the airport will beat that!

I notice that the stat for Toronto Pearson is that of Dec 2015 to Nov 2016. It may be that the calendar year stat may end up a little higher with a possible subsequent increase in ranking higher than #32.

It's for the 2016 calendar year: https://www.torontopearson.com/uploa...gerSummary.pdf

Pearson has a good shot at making the Top 30 next year but it would require it to stay ahead of BCN. With the 150th national birthday celebrations airports across the country might see a bigger boost in 2017 than one would otherwise expect. I wouldn't be surprised to see growth over 10% at Pearson over 2016 numbers. 49-50 million?

Hi guys,

I am back from my holiday and here is the latest list of worlds busiest airports for 2017
I am still missing approx 150-160 airports that should be over 1 million passengers, importantly for 7 airports with over 10 million passengers (DEN, PHL, BWI, HNL, YUL, CAI, SNA) I have not exact data yet

Incomplete list of busiest airports in 2016 (over 1 000 000 passengers)
getting more and more airports

EDIT: I added the same list based on countries

Some of the figures will change when the official statistics will be released (no rounded numbers)

Polonia International Airport is the old airport of Medan, Indonesia and is nowadays called Soewondo Air Force Base.
Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) is the new airport of Medan since 2013.

I don't know if the figures are all legit, but here you go;

2 Ngurah Rai International Airport - Denpasar/Bali - 19,986,415
3 Juanda International Airport - Surabaya - 19,483,844
4 Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport - Makassar - 10,672,942
5 Kualanamu International Airport - Medan - 8,940,000
6 Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Airport - Balikpapan - 7,500,000

Thanks as always for the charts bubbalo! So I was interested in the Los Angeles "airport system", and it looks LA as a whole crossed the 100 million passenger mark!:

LAX: 80,921,527
ONT: 4,241,986
BUR: 4,142,943
LGB: 2,852,294
Total: 92,158,750
And John Wayne airport hasn't put up their full year stats, but they do have up to November (source):
SNA: 9,625,555 as of November 2016
Total with SNA up to Nov:101,784,305

My guess is that the system will end between 102-103 million passengers.

In addition, it looks like Chicago broke the 100 million passenger mark as well!

ORD: 78,306,906
MDW: 22,677,589
Total: 100,984,495

Paris and Shanghai also hit 100 million plus this year as well; so by my reckoning that puts the worldwide list of 100 million plus "airport systems" at eight (in order):
1. London
2. New York
3. Tokyo
4. Shanghai
5. Atlanta
6. Los Angeles
7. Paris
8. Chicago

There's a pretty good chance that once all the statistics are in that Beijing and Dubai also hit that mark, putting the list of 100 million plus passenger airport systems at an even 10 worldwide.

Ok man, thanks, I will update the list

@aquamaroon: thanks for your support, you are right about first 9 cities (PEK transported 94.3 million passengers in 2016 and NAY 5.2 in 2015, assuming little higher number in 2016, so in total they could get over 100 mil combined) but Dubai airports wont reach that mark this year, perhaps in 2017

Both Toronto and Barcelona will jump Charlotte and Miami and enter the top 30 briefly. There are though a number of asian airports behind that has much more growth potential, Doha will grow like crazy with Qatar Airways (15-20%?), Taipei, Kunming, Chongqing and Xian in China will probably outgrow both Barcelona and Toronto in something like 12-36 months time.

Barcelona for the whole of 2017 is expected to grow between 11 and 13% and possibly hitting 50m but that would require 14% growth. Only between Ryan air and easyJet Barcelona will se about 1,2 million more seats for 2017. Winter season has added about 30 new routes (13,5% more seats compared to last winter) and summer season will add a similar amount of new routes of which half of them will be intercontinental.
