DC is one of the USA's Most Beautiful, Cultural, Cosmopolitan Cities

I don't know why there aren't pictures of the US capital in this forum. I could be wrong but I couldn't find any. I know - - we're talking of Skyscraper Cities here and DC doesn't have skyscrapers. But there are tons of Paris pictures, DC should qualify because DC has a very Parisian character.

Will begin posting pictures that I took in the summer of 2004.

Hmmm - - -looks like I couldn't post. I am looking for the "browse" button and can't find it. Help appreciated on posting pictures.

DC is represented, just not as much here as it is at ssp.

Well, you know you need to upload your photos to a photo hosting site, ie; photobucket, yahoo, etc...
then, right click on your photo and click on "properties" and you'll see the url address. highlight the entire address and then right click in it then click "copy". come back here then, (in the Post Reply or Quick Reply box), put a and make sure that there isn't any spaces between the

hit the "post reply or quick reply button. WVALA! There you go.

BTW, I think you'd be very interested in this site: www.beyonddc.com

It is EVERYTHING DC. The guy who runs the site goes by the nick: "Cirrus". You'll see him post allot of DC stuff here at this site at times but mostly he posts at www.skyscraperpage.com I believe. Thought you'd like to know.

Dan runs beyonddc, yeah DC is definitely represented, but on the development and skyscraper boards, it's pretty underrepresented, compared to cities like Charlotte, and other smaller cities.

Thanks for that tip on posting pictures. Hopefully, I can post some this week.

I checked BeyondDC and it was great. I certainly enjoyed the Gallery.

Will make sure not to duplicate the pictures of BeyondDC when I finally post the pictures.

I completely agree. I wish there was more talk of DC on these boards, but I guess there just aren't that many DC forumers. You'll note that some cities have tons of representatives, while others, for whatever reason, just don't have as many. I personally am very interested in DC, but I don't know so much on its development side. Being from Baltimore and living in Miami, I have enough trouble keeping up with the projects going on in these two development monsters, much less keep up with a great city like DC. DC has SO MUCH. Of all the cities in the world that I have been to, I don't think any of them have quite as many cultural offerings as DC does. I've visited the Smithsonian at least two dozen times and have still not seen all of it! I've often wondered if it would be appropriate to consolidate the DC and Baltimore development threads into one, or make a separate one for projects that concerned both cities, but given the demographics of the forum, it would probably just turn into a Baltimore thread. Nevertheless, I think one of the reasons that DC is not talked about so much is because no single project in DC really has the ability to change the city in the same manner that a 70-story skyscraper would change another city. For this reason, DC forumers probably only find it viable to talk about such projects as the metro expansion or the Anacostia Waterfront. A single twelve story building just isn't so interesing, I suppose....

Yeah that's true. There's tons of construction going on, lots of large projects. I think the lack of representatio is the largest thing though. I'm at college and it's hard to keep up with the development news, the next big thing will probably be the stadium announcement whenever that comes along with all the new construction that will take place there. But there's lot of neighborhoods that are making a turnaround and tons of the development in the area too.

Does anyone know if there's any upscale clothing retailers that are constructing/opening stores in Downtown DC? Stores along the lines of Lacoste, FCUK, Armani, Abercrombie & Fitch...

I wish DC didn't have heigh restrictments and actually had a skyline. Other national capitols have skylines, why can't ours?

I don't think Washington D.C. is very cosmopolitan. Beautiful and cultural are for sure true about the capital of the United States.

It's much more cosmopolitan than it gets credit for.

DC doesn't get credit for being as liberal a city as it is. Not just democratic, but liberal, probably b/c of it's geography and who's in office right now, and it's image of boring politicians everywhere.

But there are institutions like G'town, and American, and GW and there are lot of intl. people that are here to study gov't and most of them are liberal. Many of the people out there that study gov't, political science, law, sociology, DC is one of the top places for them to pursue somehting like this. There's also a lot of yuppies all over the city. There are museums, theatre, restaurants, shopping, etc.

DC is a big attractor for gays too. There's a lot of yuppie, and quirky neighborhoods. Along with the quiet traditional ones.

Actually, when I think about it, I don't know how DC isn't cosmopolitan. While there's the whole lobbying and political culture, anyone who has spent a significant amount of time here, especially at a younger age will tell you that if you hang out on the west side of town, it's hard to come away with the sentiment that it's not cosmopolitan.

It's probably behind Boston and NYC, and ahead of Philly in this sense, but all of the big cities on the NE corridor are pretty cosmopolitan.

^ it could be my description or judgment of "Cosmopolitan". My view of "Cosmopolitan" is like a city like either New York City, Toronto, or places where fashion is huge and trendy and have sophisticated downtowns and light up at night, stuff like that.

Well, while downtown isn't sophisticated, there are a some trendy and fashionable neighborhoods, dc being a city dominated by gov't this is what is mostly done downtown. It can be a lot better in terms of shopping though, but I think cosmopolitan means really liberal pretty much, very multicultural and diverse in other ways. I think it's very palpable when you spend time in DC. Among the college community, it's a pretty desirable place to do an internship, not only b/c of gov't but this reason too, I'm hoping there is something done that would attract attention to this trait of the city.

I always thought of DC being super cosmopolitan, but I can see why you would think otherwise. I guess it depends on what qualities you associate with cosmopolitan. For instance, NYC, LA and Miami are all very much cosmo. Not only are they in with the latest fashions and hip culture, but they are also responsible for creating much of it. They also attract a lot of tourists which makes the place seem very worldly. I suppose being international is also a quality of cosmopolitan. However, these can't be the only qualities. Places like Ibiza are major trend setters, but I wouldn't consider them very cosmo. DC, I guess, is cosmopolitan, but for different reasons than say Milan or Paris. It's very sophisticated and intellectual, and its residents are definitely worldly, but its culture is nothing glamorous. Although, DC does have a few pop-culture gems. It boasts the number one rated nightclub in North America, it is the birthplace of many forms of music, specifically some types of funk and, one that is gaining much international popularity - emo rock. But for the most part, downtown DC is not downtown Tokyo, and DC fashion is not Milan. But I would definitely put DC above par on the cosmopolitan scale.

Cosmopolitan according to Websters: 1. Common to or representative of many parts of the world. 2. At home anywhere in the world.

DC isn't a fashion capital. However, it is very cosmopolitan. Because of embassies, respresentatives of international business, government, science, culture, academia, etc., DC is home to an elite population from around the world. DC and its suburbs are filled with the best and brightest from all over the US and the world. It is hard to explain how this dynamic effects the city. But, it creates an incredible mix of people rarely found in one place. People that judge cities by flashiness may not understand or see what is happening in DC. Also, many tourists don't really see the neighborhoods and don't realize the city is a cross section of the world with vibrant colorful neighborhoods. Also, many DC suburbs are as urban and sophisticated as the central core of many other cities. In other words, the sophistication of the city goes deep and wide. Not just a pocket or section of the city. Popular culture doesn't play up the colorful side of DC, so many people don't know or understand the dynamics of the city/metro area.
