..Da.....DC is very cosmopolitan/international, DC and Balitmore are often refered too as a reagion which has a population of over 8 million people. All the countries of the world have there embassies in DC. You can find a resturant serving any type of food from all countries of the world. All the top US hotel names and many of the worlds top chains are there. If any world recording acts or shows/entainers have US tours DC is always a stop. In the DC metro there is highend shopping from all the major retailers and designers from the US and the world. It is also a think tank for many world organisations. The highway north of DC to Fredrick MD and the Dulles corridor is a high tech and bio hub. DC/Baltimore has one of the most highly educated work forces with a high number of doctors, scientist, and engineers. That is money and knowledge which would help drive a cosmopolitan and international feel or atmosphere and help fuel a need for other support services and worldly titillation...

While we're at it: Lets not forget to put a good word in for all those tens of thousands of beltway lobbysts.

Certainly no conflicts of interest there!

DC should be on your list. It's a must-see for anyone visiting the US. On another note, are you backpacking from the east to west coast? That's like backpacking from Paris to Teheran in terms of distance!

Haha Il be getting flights. My plan is:

Manchester UK, to New York City by air (obvz lol)
New York City to DC by train
DC to Chicago by air
Chicago to Dallas by air
Dallas to LA by air
LA to San Fran by air
San Fran to Philadelphia by air
Philadelphia to NYC by train

What do you as an American (im guessing) think of that list?

Il be spending approx 2 days in each place. I wouldnt mind visiting Las Vegas and Detroit but I dont think I will have enough money.

For trips within the Northeastern US I would seriously look at either BoltBus or Megabus as they tend to be much more affordable than Amtrak plus the buses themselves are very comfortable and even include wi-fi. Plus the bus fare itself can also be as low as $1 if you book early enough.

Also as someone from Texas I must ask is there a reason why you decided to stop in Dallas rather than say Austin/San Antonio? Not that there is anything wrong with the city itself but it is not very touristy, and the city does not have anything to offer for an unique experience for foreign visitors than say either Austin/San Antonio/New Orleans or even Fort Worth.

Ah right. Looking at the train website they fare was $32 I think which seems really cheap to me lol. I will have alook at the buses though. I just dont want to be on a bus for hours on end.

In regards to Dallas, I want to visit Texas and its the city in the state that I know most about. However, you have made me think lol. What is San Antonio like then??

Well it's only a four hour bus ride between DC and NYC, and for Philadelphia-NYC it is only about two hours (that is if there is little traffic).

Anyways regarding San Antonio well it is probably the most tourist friendly city in Texas with alot of museums, historic sites, and even theme parks such as the Riverwalk, the Alamo, the other various spanish missions, Market Square, Sea World, Six Flags, La Vilita, etc. Combine that with nearby Austin (which also has museums, lots of outdoorsy stuff, and a very thriving alternative music/nightlife scene) and the surrounding Texas Hill Country and you have enough stuff to do as well in addition to having a unique "Texas" experience.

Dallas and even Houston by comparison are mostly a business orientated cities (kind of like Frankfurt in Germany) so they do not really have much unique to offer for visitors, however if you are still focused on visiting the DFW Metroplex I will highly recomend that you visit Fort Worth since it has a thriving downtown around Sundance Square, a few museums such as the Kimbell Art Museum (which was a very architectural significant building designed by Louis Kahn), and even cattle drives around the Fort Worth Stockyard.

Anyways if you are interested there is also a Texas section here on SSC where you could get input from other people, in additon to Frommer's Texas if you want to do more research.
