Yeah it's suppose to float and when the people look up, they'll see the Beijing 2008 logo. I still don't know how they'll float it though... possibly a blimp or something.

They ARE building the one that looks like a bird's nest. They're just modifying it a bit so that it costs less and uses less steel. Basically, they're taking the retractable roof away from the design and widening the opening of the stadium.

Nothing happened to those proposals they were just used in the planning stages and used as a gerneric image or vision of the olympic park, as you can notice the design although IMO is simple sophisticated and elegant has no symoblic importance to china as a country and much resembles the olympic stadium in germany. secondly notice the two arenas on either side, one was the aquatic centre and the other the main indoor hall, these designs are not very inspired and in some ways almost look exactly the same.

The same goes with the London 2012 bid the renders of the hockey stadium , olympic stadium and so forth unless venues are already planned to be built are simply ideas and not the final design, design competitions will then be carried out to create a stadium of meaning and symbolic importance to a country and city. In cases where a stadium already exists, this is not needed, other examples would be th design of the paris 2012 aquatic centre and new superdome, i am certain that neither of those renderings are the final design, and new designs will be developed if the games are awarded to paris.

If you are interested in these designs in particular

the main indoor stadium proposals:

as well as the green indoor stadium as above..

actual rendering of what the olympic park will look like in 2008.

the green stadium was chosen as the main indoors stadium so this is the correct vision of beijing 2008

I was in beijing recently, and before anything they need to resolve the smog issue. I couldnt breate, and within 15 minutes of being outside I got a sore throat. Imagine how it is going to be with the marathon runners.

Still it cost $12 billion compares to Sydney's $5 billion.

Infastructure associated with the games. (Transportation, redevelopment etc) And the securty bill, which was 1.2 billion.
