Define your city's sphere of influence

I saw this on skyscraperpage.com before making this and it gave me a good idea, what is the area that your city has the most influence under? Not only suburbs but other counties and states also.

Me, I live near Hartford, CT. My area is heavily influenced by Boston and New York but not as much as Connecticut cities. We have our own region here and even influence our smaller neighbor Springfield, MA.

Our Area isn't like the other Connecticut cities like Bridgeport, Stamford, New Haven, or Waterbury which actually are all part of the NYC metro area. We aren't also like Providence or Manchester, NH which are little sisters to Boston.

How about your city and its area?

Chicagos sphere of influence kinda blocks ours from view...kind of like a fat lady infront of a small 15 inch television.

Rochester has so much of a dispute over this because nearby Buffalo claims some of the same areas. I say that it influences all counties that boarder Monroe county, where Rochester itself is located...So that would include the counties of, first and foremost Ontario, because much of that county is full blown Rochester suburbia, next would be Wayne, of which the western end is also pretty much suburbia too, then the smallest of the surrounding counties, Oreleans, just to the west of Monroe county. The county just to the south of Monroe, Livingston has some suburban towns like Caledonia, and Genesee county is qute disputed. Some say it more Rochester, some say it is more Buffalo, and some say that it is actualy part of the Batavia micropolitan (Batavia is the county seat, and has a population of around 10,000)

I know how it is with disputes, Hartford is always thought as in Boston's sphere, like it is the only center of New England. Even though it's the largest city and metro, it claims the whole region as its own area.

Boston has very little influence here, and the further south you go, it has less and less. And when you get to Stamford, it gets to nil.

Huntsville is influenced greatly by Birmingham and Nashville. We are also overshadowed by them. Until a few years ago, it was hard for developers to get retail chains to locate in Huntsville, because they were already in Bhm or Nashville. The same still goes with trying to get airlines (ie Southwest) to locate at Huntsville International. The influence by our larger neighbors goes all the way down to our dairy products. On the back of our milk cartons, the ads tell us to "Watch Channel 4 News at 10" (Nashville NBC afilliate) or "Recycle-It's Nashville's Nature!"

I Don't think Boston really influences Maine or Vermont, sure a lot of people from Boston Vacation there, but so do a lot of people from New York.. and really, all over, they are two of the biggest vacation states in the country.

The Twin Cities hinterland is Minnesota and the Dakotas, we share Iowa and Wisconsin with Chicago.

Yes, you can buy the Star-Tribune at convenience stores in Mason City IA, as well as the Des Moines Register at convenience stores in Austin MN.

They sell the Chicago Tribune all over town, as well as Chicagoland/Downtown Chicago maps at pretty much every gas station/Walgreens. I dont know if Minneapolis has such a pull anywhere in Wisconsin besides the Western part which is included in its metro. Perhaps La Crosse.

Indy's is most of Indiana, except the "Region" in NW IN, down by Cincy and the few counties around Louisville.

My small borough's sphere of influence barely covers its own 2 square miles.

New York City's sphere of influence ends somewhere near Mars.

The sphere of influence in Phila extends to the Lehigh and the Poconos up north, Reading and Lancaster areas to the west, Wilmington and the rest of Delaware down south, and Trenton, Camden, and the Jersey Shore from Cape May County to Ocean County east.

Its so hard for my city to have a large sphere of influence. 35 minutes south is Washington, the most influential city in the world, 90 minutes north is Philadelphia, one of the largest cities in the US and 2.5 hours north (which really feels much closer because of the huge NYC transient population in the Baltimore area) is New York which as another poster pointed out, really has an infinite sphere of influence.
