This can be the second most exciting subway news in years, after the grand opening of three brand new lines and two extensions simultaneously in Shanghai on Saturday, December 29, 2007.

The decoration sure beats Shanghai Metro's utilitarian approach.

I've spent 3 days in Beijing and have to say its totally different from southern cities, the same true for metro as well. I ink Beijing metro is more like Moscow metro.

Agree. I also feel Beijing's metro is overall behind of those new ones built in southern cities, in terms of design, hygiene and interchange convenience (let alone the 1960s style line 1 stations).

Riders say Line 6 might be the best of Beijing's all metro lines.

Yes, for the moment Beijing metro is largest in the world, measured in system length, that should change later in favour of Shanghai. On the other hand I believe the Beijing line 10 will the largest ring when completed and probably the longest metro tunnel already.

That would be the same Hat600 that maintains the SVG metro maps in Wikipedia? Nice pictures too.

that should change in favour of Shanghai for end of 2013 only, after that Beijing metro will re-gain the lead. Beijing's urban area is bigger than Shanghai so it's natural that Beijing has a longer metro system. I think Shanghai will prevail in terms of metro density and interchange convenience.

Same here. L13 extention has never popped up in any of the future plans so far.

Northeast Line is it the Pinggu Line? Pinggu is northeast of Beijing.

sorry its line 14 west not line 13 west, updated original post.

northeast line is to densify the northeast metro coverage, going from north to Tiantongyuan east, passing line 10 and Dongdaqiao to reach southeast area.

here's the source: http://news.xinhuanet.com/energy/201..._124183036.htm

It appears by this photo that there is a cross-platform transfer between inbound Line 4 and southbound Line 9 at National Library station. This might be the first such transfer in the capital.

Holy beautiful modern subway. Those glass walls really put Chinese subways in a different league.

The one negative is that the Beijing metro doesn't remind you of the capital of an up-and-coming superpower. They should be decorated like those in Moscow!

I prefer Beijing's or any other Chinese cities' modern clean MTR-ist style over moscow's any day. It reflects on an up-and-coming superpower that is modern clean and functional.

All Chinese metros are squeaky clean and modern, which is positive. But there's more to China than just modernity and functionality. China is not Singapore. This is the world's oldest civilization which is also an emerging superpower. At least it's not impossible to add some art to the stations afterwards.
