By hat600 on Wikipedia
Shan'gezhuang (With the apostrophe) should be utilized according to Hanyu Pinyin (PRC's standard of romanizaion).

This is to avoid ambiguity as shangezhuang can be read "shang e zhuang" or "shan ge zhuang".

A famous example of such use of apostrophe would be Xi'an, to distinguish it from xian (Single syllable).

No. Pre-war stations were nice but in general not masterpieces like those of the 1950s.

Does 28 Dec carry some significance in China? Many metro lines in different cities were planned to open on that day.

It ends with an eight and that means luck in China.

Also, I suspect, it's convenient for being almost the last day of the year. If a metro line is to open in 2014 or any other year, December 28 is not a bad day to pick.

Just got back from Beijing myself and I'd say yes. All stations are clean and kept that way.

Have taken extensive videos and pictures of the subway so will share as soon as I sort them all.

Went on all the new lines too.

Clean they will likely remain (labour cost will go up, but this will be counteracted by automation), but they will definitely be less shiny.

The predominant colour of the Beijing metro (and most HRS stations) is white, and that is the hardest colour to keep as new.

If you look around at the little older stations (that is all lines except 1 and 2), you will find cracks and damages. The stations have not been unaffected by time, not to speak of the massive daily traffic.

Indeed, that is very true. I "lived" one station away from the southern terminal of line 5, and that area is not a rich area at all, yet the station was still in very good order despite it being in a rather run-down area of the city. Still shiny, but not so much as the newest. There were definite signs of wear and tear in places on the system, but no moreso than similar systems around the world I'd say.

I think of Hong Kong as the near future of Beijing. The wrapper is long taken off, but the package is still good.

While I was in Beijing I took a LOT of videos and pictures of the public transport system (including one or two from buses, particularly bus number 2).

So, over the next few weeks, I'll feature them on YouTube for everyone to see if you are interested.

First up, a quick interchange at Dongdan station between line 1 and line 5 in the centre of Beijing.

A very brief panorama of Liujiayao station, which was close to where we stayed (at shazikou). This gives an impression of the quality of the construction of the metro platforms.

Interchange between line 5 and line 6 at Dongsi station. The line 6 station in particular is impressive with its decoration here.

Interchange at Nanluoguxiang station between line 6 and line 8. You can see departures of trains at both stations.

Hope you guys enjoy. I have a lot more videos and pictures of the subway. I really enjoyed using it.

Just a few pictures from my first day in Beijing. Here is Dongdan station on Lines 1 and 5. These pictures are of the line 5 platforms.

And now Lujiayao station on line 5.

It's so nice to see how fast the metros in China grow, but its a pity that all stations look more or less the same. One can't distingish stations in Guangzhou, Beijing or Xi'an. In some cases you can observe some local details, but in overall they are all very similar.

Some lines have unique designs. I will feature some of the nicer and more distinct stations in Beijing later. Line 5 is probably the least distinct of them all.
