Locarno, Switzerland

Those shots were taken just a few days before the famous Locarno Film Festival.

Locarno is situated in the Italian part of Switzerland. So, language, culture and lifestyle have very much in common with Italy.

I know Lugano, been there many times, but never in Locarno.

Can someone tell me the main differences between the two?

I see many similarities, perhaps Lugano is a bit bigger and richer? Or am I wrong?

Lugano is much bigger - the city has now about 56'000 pop, 130'000 in the agglomeration. It's mainly a banking city (one of the highest bank densities of the world, the the highest in Switzerland).

Locarno the center of a touristic agglomeration (from Tenero over Ascona to Brissago) of about 45'000, the city itself has only 14'000 and most of what you think is Locarno, like the lake avenue, the train station, the old hotels etc are not even in the city proper. Southern Ticinesi municipalities are very small in area and thus in pop. Locarno has the film festival and is more kind of a day-tourist lower and middle class destination of the Zurich people.

Its neighbour Ascona is an upper-class resort and retirement place of mainly Germans and also got some fame as an center of esoterism as the Eurythmie.

The capital of the Ticino is Bellinzona with about 40'000 pop including the suburbs. Lugano-Locarno-Bellinzona are also known as the Ticino Metro. The southern Mendrisiotto (Chiasso, Mendrisio) are suburbs of Como (I), that forms a metro of about 220'000 (1/5 in Switzerland). So much for numbers...

I remember when I joined some 14 months ago there was NOT ONE Swiss topic and when I posted my first pics people said, it's a pity that these cities are so unknown here.

It's still kinda true - I only saw once a Fribourg banner of a Swiss city and generally countries as Austria, Sweden, Belgium, Indonesia or Peru are highly underrated here while you get an overdose of Dubai, Sampa, MC, Shanghai etc. Clear they are high developping skyscraper cities and thus impressive, but a wider range of countries and cities would be great. The problem is that if you post something in a photo forum people are just not interested in something that doesn't have a Manhatten skyline, a Burj Dubai or a building-mountain-mixture as HK... That's one of the reasons I was starting with the GTC one year ago, there you have the freedom to post also unknown but beautiful places

When did you visited Locarno. I visited thisi city 3 times, it is stunning. I recognize everything. The same setting for the event, the same shops even the beachvolleybal event is the same. Are these pictures shot in 2002 or 2003?

Locarno looks beautiful! Like a wonderful stereotypical European city! I'd love to visit it some time!

I found some more Locarno pics (unfortunatly not by me...)

And a nice aireal - you see how it is practically build together with the capital Bellinzona in the background. The neighbourhood in front on the lake is the famous high class town of Ascona:
