Albany Assets Crown Tower | 54 floors | 160m | Cancelled

Seems some preliminary work is starting at the site now. Time for it's own thread.

CROWN BUILDING
Height: Tower: 131m/430ft - 44 floors
Office: 46m/151ft - 11 floors
Usage: 237 flats in tower, 137,000sqft of office in lower building, ground floor resturaunt.
Architects: Ian Simpson
Developers: Albany Assets
Cost: £83 million
Timeframe: Starting late 2005, opening 2008.
Notes: The tower will be the 3rd/4th tallest in the city by the end of 2008. The site, on Aytoun Street opposite the Minshull St courts, is home to a 5 storey building completed in 1951. It has been derelict for around 20 years. Albany Assets bought the land and building for £6 million, it will be demolished in Q4 2005.
The site is less than 200m away from the site of the Eastgate Tower(188m - approved) and opposite the Piccadilly Place project.

Current building:

So demolition should begin soon then? Its a pity they couldnt demolish another building to make way for Albany. The Crown Building has quite a charm to it. It looks like a kind of gritty backstreet theatre. I like that

What is that at the top of the tower? It looks like there's a sloping roof piece at one end. Does it have a 'crown?'

That's what I was thinking too. Still, it's like a little brother to Beetham and I think having two in the same family is a good thing....)

I remember going into the Job Centre in the Crown Building when I was 18 in 1988 half-heartedly looking for my first job. Accura, its saving grace is that it obviously has a 1930s element to it, but it's still a disgusting utilitarian piece of crap. Get it pulled down!!

It is going to be one hell of a journey from Piccadilly Gardens to Station on the tram, this and Eastgate on the left just before you enter into the Piccadilly Place area, how vastly different and improved from what people's first sights of the city are today.

Can you imagine how good it's going to be with this big blue beautiful building welcoming visitors arriving at Piccadilly Station?

Wow.

Of course, some spoilt brats will always find something to whine about!

I'm not keen on the top. The crown reminds me of what the original plans for the JM Centre were like. It was meant to be twice the height and half the width. Other than that I think it's slab-tastic. It'd be great as part of a growing cluster though.

Property and the site. How else would they build on the land if they don't own it?

George Wimpey paid something like £8 million for the GN Tower site!
