I know back in April there was lots of fanfare about construction beginning but I take it all that actually happened was a groundbreaking ceremony - see this article for details: http://english.vietnamnet.vn/biz/2005/04/414719/.

Work begins on nation’s tallest building
16:07' 26/04/2005 (GMT+7)

Vietnamese property developer Bitexco yesterday commenced work on what is now described as the country’s tallest building in HCM City’s commercial district. US$100mil will be needed for the 61-story Financial Tower office building, which will be situated at a 5,400sq.m site surrounded by Hai Trieu, Ho Tung Mau and Ngo Duc Ke streets in District 1.

The 270m tall skyscraper will have total floor space of more than 100,000sq.m, with the first four levels reserved for a commercial centre and the rest for offices of local and foreign banks, financial firms and insurers, among others. The design shows the building is elegant in structure as it will be derived from the form of the lotus, built with steel structures and clad with glass.

Bitexco president Vu Quang Hoi said at the groundbreaking ceremony that the form of the lotus indicating the Vietnamese cultural spirit plus the modern design would make the building a distinctive architectural work. Seen from the Saigon River, the Financial Tower will look like a sail rising up to the skies, he said, adding the 30m top section of the building would be lit up as a lighthouse and opened to visitors who wanted to view the entire city from there.

He said this huge property project aimed to meet demand for office space that was forecast to grow sharply in the next few years when the country fully integrated in the world economy.Minister of Construction Nguyen Hong Quan appreciated the project, saying the Financial Tower could be seen as the city’s iconic building in the 21st century.

The building will be ready within 30 months and it will take at least 10 years to recoup the investment capital, Mr Hoi said.A consortium led by the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) has lent $60mil to the project.

The city’s current tallest building is the Saigon Trade Centre also in District 1, with 33 stories. Early this year the Ministry of Planning and Investment licensed a $115mil project to build the 65-story Hanoi City Complex in Hanoi.

The first property project of Bitexco, which is based in the northern province of Thai Binh and specialises in textiles, Vital-brand bottled drinking water and hydropower plant construction, is the 19-story Bitexco building in HCM City’s District 1. This building with total floor space of more than 6,000sq.m is now full. Bitexco is now involved in two other major property projects worth a total of $205mil - The Manor in HCM City and The Manor in Hanoi.

Yes. But it's safe to say that it will really start construction within the next six months. There are also some nice old French buildings that will probably be demolished first.

Looks a bit strange, but still nice and futuristic. Good for Ho Chi Minh City to get such a nice tower.

Great Tower but it's like taipei 101, and kingdom center nothing in the skyline fits with it.

Wow! This is one impressive building!
It's an indication that Vietnam is on its way to becoming a tiger.

Are you ready to roar?
