The only major project really connected with the games is the games village. There are some problems with site selection. Construction of that has not started.

Most venues are pre existing ones that will be upgraded/spruced up. I think only two new small stadiums will be built.

A proper airport terminal would have been good but as things stand, there doesn't seem to be much hope for it. But things can change provided all political parties and trade unions set aside their squabbling and agree that a proper airport terminal is desperately needed.

I have read a lot of fancy projects announced in the press by politicians and babucrats. I think they may be just taking us for a ride as usual.

On the other hand I don't think there is any need to lose sleep over the CGW.

What happened to the games village of the 1982 Asiad?

After the end of the Asian Games, the flats were sold off to private bidders. It is a very desirable residential location of Delhi now and is still called 'Asiad Village'. It is still located on Khel Gaon Marg (Khel Gaon is Hindi for 'Games Village'). Incidentally, President Kalam lived for a long time in a room in a flat in Asiad Village before moving to Rashtrapati Bhavan (his organization, DRDO, had bought a flat and converted it into a guest house).

BTW, the infrastructure consultant (an Austrian firm, I think) for the Commonwealth Games has asked DDA to shift the location of the Games village from the one shown in the map above. It is because it is too close to a railway line (hence athletes are likely to be constantly disturbed by the noise) and to the Akshardham temple (there will be traffic difficulties because both athletes and pilgrims will be using the same road). DDA will soon finalize the new location for the Games village. I am not sure if there are other locations available that are so convenient, but they will announce the decision soon.

I think with the '10 games, finally India will have atleast one city with infrastructure that is comparable to other top cities around the world.

Kalmadi unsure on Commonwealth venues

Organisers of the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games said on Monday they would have to build many new venues, including swimming and athletics complexes, raising concerns of huge cost overruns.

"The major issue is the athletics stadium, whether to make a new stadium or renovate the present one," organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi said. "We are open to anything."

The organisers, who met on Monday to discuss a draft report on infrastructure prepared by an Australian company, said they also favoured new indoor halls for wrestling, weightlifting, netball, badminton, squash besides a new media centre.

The Australian experts had rejected the acquatic complex and recommended major renovation of the track and field venue, both built for the 1982 Asian Games.

The Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, the showpiece venue for the 1982 games, may eventually stage only the opening and closing ceremonies.

On March 26th, 2006 the Commonwealth Games Flag will be handed over to India in the closing ceremony of the 18th CWG in Melbourne to keep in safe custody till 2010 CWG in Delhi.

India will be presenting a cultural show in the closing ceremony of Melbourne Games depicting India Culture.


The dates for the Commonwealth Games, the biggest international event in the recent past of the city of Delhi, have been decided. The Games will be held from Oct 03 to Oct 14, 2010.

Seventy One (71) countries will be participating, and the opening and closing ceremony is slated to be at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Oct 03 and Oct 14 respectively.

C'Wealth Games: Steps urged to create more hotel space

THE Government should take immediate measures to boost hotel infrastructure in the country especially ahead of the Commonwealth Games slated to be held here in 2010, the Federation of Hotels and Restaurant Association of India, has said.

The association has estimated that an investment of about Rs 20,000 crore will be required to have enough hotel rooms to accommodate the expected rush of people for the global sporting event.

To facilitate in the development of infrastructure, the FHRAI and the Hotels and Restaurant Association of Northern India (HRANI) have formed a Delhi chapter. "We are totally racing against time. The private sector is willing to help the Government develop infrastructure, but we need to get started now," the FHRAI President, Mr Manbeer Choudhary, said.

Nothing new from the Government of Delhi. Like the federal or any state government, i expect it to sit on its lazy, useless ass till the last moment.

India today won the bid to stage the 2009 World Badminton Championship, paving the way for the country to host its first-ever world championship in an Olympic sport.

Verma said the unanimous decision was taken by the IBF, which has 160 member countries, after a presentation by India highlighting the country’s tourist attractions, its economic strength, its population base for such events, the proven credibility of Indian establishment and the government’s full support for hosting a competition of such magnitude.

Delhi: Govt forms Special Purpose Vehicle for transport development

Gearing up for the fast-nearing Commonwealth Games, the Delhi Government today decided to set up an independent authority on the lines of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to put in place a multi-modal transport system in the national capital in the next three years.
The Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), which got the cabinet nod today, would implement and operate three different modes of transport -- Monorail, High Capacity Buses (HCBs) and Light Rail Transit system -- in Delhi to meet the requirements, expected to rise manifold in the next few years.

The SPV-Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System would be headed by the Chief Secretary and will have complete technical and financial powers for taking quick decisions to ensure overall improvement in passenger services and amenities.

The SPV, which would have a full-time Managing Director, three full-time directors and eight part-time directors, would be responsible for implementation, operation, maintenance, planning, design and financing of all the modes of transport, while the governance aspect would be with the Government.

Britons in Delhi to give tips on 2010 Games

A British delegation is here to share their experience, knowledge and best practices with Indian stakeholders involved in the Commonwealth Games 2010 to be held here.

The delegation includes companies involved in the organisation of the Manchester Commonwealth Games 2002 and stakeholders in London's bid to host the 2012 Olympics.

The delegation includes companies that specialise in security issues, crowd control, public relations and marketing communication, transport systems and construction and engineering.

After arriving here at the beginning of the week, the delegation visited various venues and proposed sites for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. They also attended a seminar with Indian stakeholders and firms involved with the event including the Delhi Developmental Authority and Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

Members of the delegation stressed on the beneficial impact of public-private participation in the development of new infrastructure for such events and its legacy as a long-term revenue generator.

They also underlined the importance of the Games as an opportunity to showcase the city and the nation on the world stage that would in turn have a multiplier effect on tourism inflows and foreign direct investment.

All flyovers to be ready before Commonwealth Games: Dr Walia

The Delhi government is committed to commissioning all under-construction and proposed flyovers before the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The actual construction work for the flyover at Azadpur Crossing was likely to start in June 2006, flyover at Mukarba Chowk by April 2006, Neela Hauz Bridge by May 2006, RUB connecting Road No. 58 & 64 at Jhilmil by October 2006 and Shastri Park Grade Separator also by October 2006.

The project of elevated Ring Road was also discussed thoroughly in the meeting and it was decided to prepare a more useful blueprint of the project keeping in view the quantum of traffic in years to come due to the ensuing Commonwealth Games 2010.

Gulmarg to host winter segment of 2010 CW-Games

J&K government is planning to complete all the necessary infrastructure upto 2007-08 for the forthcoming Commonwealth Winter Games to be held at famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, Deputy CM Muzaffar Hussain Baig said here today.

All the necessary infrastructure for the 2010 Games scheduled to be held at the famous ski resort would be completed upto 2007-08, Baig told reporters after inaugurating tourist information and booking counter set up by Gulmarg Gandola project at Srinagar Airport.

Baig said the state has already held an international skiing event at Gulmarg last year while the National Winter Games have been held there twice since 1998.

India impress Commonwealth Games Federation

India passed the big test with flying colours on Sunday after a successful presentation to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly on its preparations for the 2010 Games in New Delhi by Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi.

After the slick 40-minute presentation, India's request for three more disciplines at the 2010 Games received a positive response and the decision to add archery, cue sports and tennis will now be taken by the CGF Sports Committee in the next few months.

Another significant move from the CGF was Pune being awarded the right to host the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games.

The Youth Games in Pune will be a unique event in itself and will be held from October 12 to 18, 2008, featuring six disciplines.

he six disciplines in the Pune Games will be athletics, badminton, boxing, shooting, tennis and weightlifting.

Swimming could be an addition to this list.

"Progress is being made in Delhi and we have a secretariat, which is up and running. As things move further forward we will be increasing staff numbers.

CGF president Michael Fennell and vice-president HRH Prince Tunku Imran will be visiting India in June to see how Pune is shaping.

Well actully today after watching the ceramony of CWGames in Australia, I was really impressed, so I just went on google images and searched for commonwealth games 2010 thats where I got it from.

No matter what's going on ground (the whole of NCR is anyway under massive construction - games or no games), India seems to have impressed the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly on its preparations for the 2010 Games. A slick 40-minute presentation was made.
