Ataturk mausoleum, Ankara

Anıtkabir is located on Anittepe (former Rasattepe) hill in Ankara. Anıtkabir memorial and museum is dedidated to the founder of modern Turkish state Gazi Mustafa Kemal (1881-1938).

Construction time: 1944-1953

The period of the Turkish architecture, in between 1940 and 1950, is known as “The Era of Second National Architecture”. During this period mostly monumental, symmetry oriented, cut stone clad buildings had been built. Anıtkabir carries the same characteristics of this era.

Anıtkabir also has Seljuk and Ottoman architectural characteristics and ornamentation features.

The mausoleum with the dimensions 75 x 52 x 17 m. has a rectangular plan and surrounded by 8 columns at the front and near facades, and 14 columns at the sides, each one is 14.40 m. high.

Bronze doors open into the Hall of Honours. Atatürk’s last message to the Turkish Army on 29 October 1938, is at the right of the entrance.

View to the south east Ankara, Kocaltepe mosque.
