I am a fan of Dubai. however I fear that in the end the place will fal behind. Reasons:
- horrible climate 8 months of the year
- no natural greenery
- not enough freedom
- culture too exotic for the mainstream

-let's say 3 months a year. also every building etc is clima controlled.
-artificial greenery and beautiful deserts and mountains
-well this is another topic, you might be right, it depends.
you feel very free actually, no segregation etc. course it's not democratic.
-could be the case but this is also interesting and they try to improve "mainstream" culture.
actually i like the city because it is multicultural.

Then I suggest you move there. I'm sure you'll find that it has a errr...higher life quality than sweden...

and marco polo yea, I agree with you. I think dubai's lack of freedom renders all the nice buildings and the city useless. I hope they can have a cultural boom alongside it's growth

i don't drink anyway so i don't care but i am not a local so it does not bother me.
well for dating , clubs and beaches, this is really a must have for a city like dubai and so it is necessary.
anyway i don't think autorities should allow everything, like gambling for example.

BTW, I don't want Casinos in Dubai, not that my opinion cares, I'm just an expatriate (like most of Dubai forumers)

Do not forget that cars have also airco. You can also sit in a car. Or in your apt. Anywhere indoors. But is that a real happy life?

As you state, all greenery is artificial. Shall I say more...

I think the culture in Dubai is one of the things that make it special. Some thngs should be allowed and are allowed, to make it moderate. Some thing though, like gambling, there is no reason to legalise and people there wouldn't appreciate it either.

For drinking, thats not a problem for me as i donät like alcohol.

As for the things they allow, like drinking. Becouse they have not been allowed before a problem with it has not arose. Now when you allow it, you can make sure to regulate it with the knowledge we got today so that you can minimize problems. If people wanna drink, let them drink. But regulate it, and be prepared to help people if it would cause problems. Such as medical or social problems.

Maybe you shouldn't but I can:

1. Do really enjoy the outdoor life in the Winter when it freezes? Do you enjoy central heating you have in your apartments or everywhere else you go? Don't tell me your home/office/transportation vehicle/ do not have heating and you can live without.

2. Are you saying that the greenery within Amsterdam is wilde and man has nothing to do with it? Do you know that NY's Central Park is also artificial greenery, all man-made landscaping with a masterplan? Yet I haven't heard no-one complaining about it.

I come from a European country and i lived in Vienna for a year. Apart from the public parks and The Ring (the road around the first district), there was hardly a tree to be seen on the Vienna streets and neighbourhoods.

what do you mean with 'the place'?

yes, it is a good city with the best construction boom,

but to go on holiday, it isn't the place to go for holiday. not jet. maybe only as they build smaller, not hotels only in a tower, but low-rise too. that's why i'm going to do business in dubai. to be an architectural-office that build low-rise buildings for hotel's, restaurants, and shops.

low-rise: 1-10 floors.

that's the only thing why i'm go to dubai. not because it is 'such a beautiful city'. btw, that isn't it. i go to dubai because i can make money there, and can work there and let grow my company.

maybe, as my vision becomes reality, i'll go every year to dubai for holiday.
