The new owner has submitted details pursuant to some conditions of the planning permission (2009). They are related to the written scheme of investigation and archaeological work, land contamination and ground water monitoring and geotechnical exploration of permission.

Crossrail tunnels run directly beneath this site. If I am not mistaken, the developers are not allowed to start demolition of the existing building/construction of Columbus until the tunnel beneath the site is constructed.
Now I'm not sure if that means just the portion of tunnel underneath the site, or the entire length of tunnel from the Canary Wharf Crossrail station to the next station. Eitherway I really don't expect this being started (funds, or otherwise) before 2014 Q4.

Cross rail needs to hurry up and get finished already. This and North Quay depend on it!! And god, the skyline would look SOOOO awesome with the addition of these two towers. On the plus side, having to wait for cross rail to get finished means once they are built the economy may have recovered some-what. Which may also mean less expense spared on cladding and design etc. No more "austerity towers".

New tower construction at CW does not need to await the opening of the Crossrail stations to start the design/construction process. Assuming a 3-4 years marketing/design/tendering/construction period we may see some project proposals this year and next so that they will be completed soon after the Crossrail station opens.

Yeh but as with North Quay, they cant physically build that proposal until cross rail workers have moved off site because they have put loads of cabins and stuff on the area the proposal was supposed to be built. Wasn't sure if the same was the case for Columbus tower.

The CW station should be finished 2-3 years before crossrail itself starts, not least because the CWG are keen to get the retail bit open asap. They could probably start working on NQ by the end of 2016 if they actually wanted to, maybe earlier depending upon how long they need the site.
