Stellar Tower to dominate skyline in Abu Dhabi as a tribute to Zayed

Dubai : An amazing building is set to dominate the Abu Dhabi skyline as a tribute to the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
The 255-metre Stellar Tower in the centre of the city will house shops, offices, a restaurant and a 300-bed hotel.

The 225-metre Stellar Tower which will be covered with a gold-coloured titanium crystal will be situated in Al Ittihad Square, Abu Dhabi.

London-based architects Make designed the building, the construction of which is due to begin next year and last for three years.

The building will have a wide base - with conference and leisure facilities surrounding a large octagonal atrium - along with a narrow stem and a wide top.

James Thomas, a partner at Make and the building’s lead architect, said Stellar Tower was designed to act as a memorial to Shaikh Zayed.

He added: “We have tried to solve the great problem of towers which is that you need a large amount of accommodation at the base together with a tower in which the most valuable space is at the top.

“Uniting the whole thing is very difficult architecturally. It is difficult structurally to create a building that is wider at the top. We have worked closely with our structural engineers, Arup, to solve this.”

The building, commissioned by the UAE’s Ministry of Finance and Industry, will be based in Al Ittihad Square in Abu Dhabi.

Thomas said it was originally going to have a less prominent location but it was moved because the authorities were so taken with the design.

The 66-storey building will be covered with a gold-coloured titanium crystal which Thomas said was good to look at as well as durable. He said the building would shimmer with reflected light.

“Stellar Tower will be a green building, with sea-water cooling and with wind turbines at roof level to provide half the building’s power. People are realising that there has got to be a sustainable way to create buildings in the Middle East,” he said.

He said that because the building became narrower from the top, the amount of sunlight falling on much of it was reduced and so the heating effect was less.

Also, the wide top meant that the amount of rainfall captured by the building was maximised, Thomas said.

Stellar Tower will cover an area of 2.5 million square feet or 230,000 square metres. The cost of the project has not been disclosed.

Thomas and many of the staff at Make used to work for Foster and Partners, one of the world’s biggest architectural practices, where they helped to create the distinctive Swiss Re building in London.

Make and Arup worked with service engineers Hilson Moran to create the design of the building.

The architecture doesn't look from the planet Earth. Very unique building and a bit creepy.

I guess glancing at whatever is on your coffee table now passes for architecture.

old enough to know they tried to be unique but failed miserably....its looks like a sand storm or a tornado depending on which rendering you look at.

the base is totally hideous, and the building overwhelming and from the article it said the building would be constructed of gold-coloured titanium crystal,do you know how expensive that would be to cover the building in that and you can't see through titanium so it doesn't make much sense to buy there to get a nice view. the tower seems so isolated the renderers should of atleast place something around it not only desert. and may i say it sounds like a great name STELAR tower..although its totally hideous.FURTHERMORE, the way the tower expands on its way up again make it ugly and stumpy and bulky.

sorry but this tower seems to much of a vision/fantasy for me to believe it was going to get built ..i guess abu dhabi got lucky

its going to be in al ittihad square which is one of the busiest places in abu dhabi and also dense. the renders dont show the location, just the tower.

He guys, is this tower that "gold looking one", they showed earlier this year in the papers?
I read that they would use gold to build the tower, that would be so decadent, but on the other side imo beautiful.
The design might be strange, I defenitly like it

Hmm I don't think this will fit in Abu Dhabi at all. I dunno what to think about it, but it's definately unique and kinda reminds me of the solar power project in Aussie.

I kind of like it. The building is very organic looking. It is kind of like an inverted greek doric column. I like buildings that break rules. Not a lot of buildings have tops that are so much wider than their bottoms.
