Hospitals in Liverpool

No doubt everybody is aware of potential plans to move the largest childrens hospital in Europe, Alder Hey, to Widnes and plans to move the Royal out of the city centre (-to where I'm not sure.)

It appears that one of the main issues is that new developments would result in a loss of green space.-- We appear to have reached the height of stupidity. How on earth can anybody think that green space is more important to peoples health than hospitals FFS!!!

And it's not only health dangers (i.e. for people in the city)that could result form these potential moves (-especially the Alder Hey move which could be OUT of the city altogether.)

Economic-- These two hospitals provide hundreds if not thousands of jobs (highly skilled, skilled and low skilled.)

Academic-- There are huge benefits to medicine in general and the universities in having a critical mass of hosptials (i.e. the practice of medicine) and universities (i.e. the research and development of medicine) near to each other. They can collaborate more effectively this way.

Prestige-- According to DL website, if this happens Liverpool will become the only city in Europe with no hospital serving its centre.

** Well apparently a bit of green space is more imprtant than all of this. It's times like this that I think "To hell with democracy"!!

I think these stories about both hospitals planning to move out of Liverpool if......., are just hype about what could happen in the worst case scenario, and used as ammunition in the press to highlight their aims. This is not going to happen, you can't have a city with no hospitals. I am of the opinnion that every major developer/development will have a go at the council if their plans are not fully accepted as is. Also these plans for new hospitals have not been fully discussed yet, but people are complaining left right and centre. Alder hey will stay put, being built on the parkland, the old site will be cleared for the parkland to be reinstated. The Royal, (a complex project here) who knows, but they will probably stay near the city centre.

Here is an opportunity for a taller building

I can't confess to know anything about the Aldre Hey situation but there's loads of land around the Royal to allow a couple of blocks at a time to be rebuilt and then the empty ones demolished and the process start again. Looking at the problem with the new bypass - why can't this be buried and the hospital built on top of it.......

A WORLD-CLASS research centre is part of the proposals being drawn up by Alder Hey to transform the children's hospital.

Executives have pulled together a wish-list of what they want to see in the new hospital, whether it remains at its current site or moves to Widnes.

A key part of the £300m development will be the creation of an institute, which is expected to be backed by Liverpool University, Liverpool John Moores and Edge Hill.

It would build on the hospital's current small-scale research centre and it is hoped it would become not just a national, but a global centre of expertise.

Steve Ryan, medical director at Alder Hey, said: "Our vision is to create a world class research centre which would develop very hi-tech forms of treatment, look at the causes of diseases and develop medicines and procedures for using them.

"But it would also be community based. We would look at local illness patterns and help develop health education programmes.

"It would include labs, teaching and research facilities. The three universities are talking of investing significant amounts of money.

"We also want to host international conferences and bring in people from all over the world."

The hospital has vowed to go ahead with its ambitious plans, which would bring the century-old workhouse into the 21st century, even if it means they are forced out of the city because of the ongoing row over the use of nearby Springfield Park for the new hospital.

Although many fear the loss of the facilities would leave a gaping hole in Liverpool's health care, residents are angry their park will be lost forever.

Knotty Ash councillor Dave Irving said: "We are just a mile away from the Rocket junction, which has the worst pollution and air quality in the city, and this park is our lung."

An alternative site has been found in Halton on playing fields off the A557 Widnes Eastern Bypass.

why does it sound so ludicrous theyd close the hospital. they want to close two hospitals in lincolnshire and move them to lincoln, meaning patients have to spend an hour in a car.

Yup, just crazy - the last thing you need when someone is unwell or worse - is difficulty getting to the hospital.

Sadly I`ve had too much experience of it.

The hospitals are a great example of how massing can occur when you get such a facility.

Losing a hospital or shipping out to the far flung suburbs is a recipe for disaster.

The Royal and Alder Hey are vital for the city and need to be retained where they are. If anything Alder Hey should be closer to the centre, nearer bus routes, trains (local and national) and other support services.

This is good news for the city- especially as the 2 are being redeveloped (-are they not?) The only trouble with the Royal is its semi-industrial, Stalinist appearance. It's good to have this stuff and the universities in the centre though.

Great news! But it's rediculous that moving out of the city was seen as an option for either hospital in the first place.

Alder Hey doesn't have bad transport links. The 10 from downtown to St Helens must be the most frequent bus in the city. Also, hopefully, we'll see Line 2 of Merseytram in the medium term and you never know, Knotty Ash train station may eventually reopen as part of Merseyrail.

Could Widnes offer this many options from central Liverpool?

What is happening with The Royal, any news yet. Have they sorted out the new road issue. I say this because an employee mentioned that the head honchos at the hospital have abandoned plans to rebuild, but take this with a pinch of salt, it's probably a misinterpretation of a rumour of what someone heared someone saying about an email sent by the head honcho months prior to some other announcement.

This is one site that does need rebuilding, as Blabbs has noted, it looks like an industrial complex. It is very ugly, and a mish mash of competng structures and add-ons, the only good thing about it is the imposing size of the main building.

Work to start on Mersey hospitals Apr 12 2006

WORK will start on a new Merseyside hospital this summer after the government agreed £338m funding.

A total of 963 beds will be created at a general hospital in Whiston - to replace the outdated building - and a new diagnostic treatment centre in St Helens.

Preparatory work has already started at Whiston and the new facilities are expected to open by the end of 2011. Ann Marr, chief executive of St Helens and Knowsley Hospitals NHS trust, said today: "This is the culmination of many years of planning by the staff of St Helens and Knowsley hospitals, local PCTs, the community, councils, Cheshire and Merseyside Strategic Health Authority and our MPs."

Health Minister Rosie Winterton approved the scheme for the trust.

It is part of a £1bn private finance initiative package for hospitals outside London.

Ms Winterton said: "New facilities like these are replacing inadequate and outdated hospitals across the country."

PFI schemes are used as a way to finance major projects without an immediate drain on the public purse.

This is great, if anyone lives near Whiston, they'll see that the building work is well under way - they're even discussing naming a block after my late Dad who was one of original proposers of the rebuilding scheme.
