Astara:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Astara-Ardebil Rd: To get from Astara to Ardabil, you have to drive up some of the steepest hights around. The road litterally hugs the border with the Republic of Azarbaijan. Heyron Pass (Gardaneyeh Heyron) is one of the most beautiful places in the province. The buses, trucks and cars have to make their way up to the top of the mountain before they can get on the multi-lane highway to Ardabil. Along the road there are wild blackberry bushes. The locals sell them in little containers at rest stops. If you are from Ardabil, you'll know all about Asheh Doogh. This is a yogurt based soup, filled with chick peas and other goodies. Plenty of this is available at any reststop, with fresh tea and snacks.. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Lake Urmieh
Lake Urmieh, Iran's largest lake besides the Caspian Sea, Is about 20 km to the east of Urmieh City. Lake Urmieh lies at an altitude of 1250 metres above sea level, and its size varies depending on seasons, between 4,500 kmē and 6,000 kmē. Its depth do not exceed 16 metres at any point. The lake is too salty for fish life, and serves little economical purpose for surrounding areas. There are several islands in the lake, of which Kabud is the largest. Presently Urmia is often called Orumiyeh. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

St. Thaddeus Cathedral, Maku.
Armenians from Tehran travel to Chaldoran Every year on July 6, Armenians from Iran and around the world gather in the Chaldoran Plains, West Azarbaijan, for a special ceremony to commemorate the anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Thaddeus, an apostle of Jesus Christ who came to preach Christianity in the early years of the religion. They spend several days praying and reciting supplications at the church. St. Thaddeus arrived in this land in 45 BC to preach Christianity but was martyred on the orders of the then king Shanadrok. To prevent the influence of the religion in that region, the king also killed his own daughter who had embraced Christianity. St. Thaddeus' tomb later became a church which was known as 'Qara Kelisa' (Black Church) or St. Thaddeus Cathedral. The king's daughter is also buried a short distance from the church. During the rituals, Muslims are not permitted into the church which is located on a hill overlooking Chaldoran Plains near Maku city. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Caste of Babak Khorram-Din.

FYI:
Azerbayjan comes from the Persian words Azer (fire) Abadgan (flourshing city) -- Azerabadgan. But over time with Turkic invasion and influence the name varied to Azerbayjan. I believe the Azeri language doesn't have the letter "g". Just an interesting factoid that I wanted to share!!!

Urmieh is the original name of the city. It was changed to Rezaieh by Reza Shah.
Urmieh is an Assyrian name. It means place of water. Assyrian and Iranian cultures have mixed very nicely after Assyria became part of Iran 2500 years ago |

3 provinces exist: eastern azerbaijan, western azerbaijan and ardabil.the center city of them are Tabriz,Urmia and ardabil. The major language of all are azeri turkish, however in western azerbaijan there are alot of kurdish people living as the second majority. pretty mountains:
