Amazing Channelside District aerials are viewable. The high resolution shots are quite impressive. Shots include: Channelside (w/St Pete Times Forum & cruise ship), CBD, Ybor City, & Harbor Island. Go to channelside.us (map). enjoy

Also, the Channelside Strategic Action Plan Workshop #2 is on 11/9 @ 6 PM @ The Florida Aquarium.

Indeed, they are nice - here are some. If you go to:

you can see them blown up all big and pretty

Nice pics, but it kind of exposes Tampa as being.... empty? Look at all the surface parking! EEW! I hate it! I can't wait for that to get filled in, though it's gonna take a while...

Like on either side of the Selmon Expressway between downtown and Meridian. Maybe after C-side and the Franklin St. corridor is more developed, that will be the next frontier. I know there is a lot going on, but it seems like it can't happen fast enough. I feel like we're in a cycle where the market and financing rates are both attractive enough for the much needed high-rise residential development we're seeing, but this dynamic won't last forever and what does not get started now or soon might not get done until the market is right again (another 10 or 15 years?). However, it seems like what's being developed now should be substantial enough to trigger some follow-up development like cafe's, retail, entertainment, etc. Just imho.

Sure, there is an empty area just in the middle of it all - but I think that is good - nothing to tear down, no real height limits, no nimbys . . .

Also, if you work downtown, walk across that "expanse" sometime and you will realize that it is basically 4-5 Tampa blocks - which are quite small. It looks huge because of where it is, but it really isn't. It is land of opportunity.

Of course, that is also the downside, because the owners are hoarding hte land, paying their taxes with revenue from the parking, and waiting to see what happens.

My personal oppinioni s that one of the most crucial lots in all of downtown - if not the most crucial lot - is the lot just south of the Ft. Brooke Garage (I beliee the city actually owns the lot, but I am not sure - someone could do a property check if so inclined). THat lot will connect the convention center/hotel/forum area to the CBD (I really don't think of it that way, but so be it). That is the lot that will make downtown connect. It needs to be filled.

Hey the map at channelside.us is completed. Its rather impressive because its done on a real pic of channelside instead of a diagram. Hopefully they'll be able to update the map as projects get closer to completion and more projects come into play.

If I was running this city I would put a real big urban park just East of the Crosstown, north of the O2 site. I would also raise height limits to like 900-1000 feet on the south side of downtown "expanse."

I don't think it'll take another 10-15 years. True, the market will slow next year. But given the emergence of the luxury highrise lifestyle, highrises will continue to sprout over time, albeit not always at a frenetic pace.

I hope it won't take 10 - 15 yrs, but I was just basing that on general high-rise development patterns in Tampa since the 70's. Seems like about every ten years or so, a handful of new buildings (offices) get developed and then nothing more happens until the next cycle. Maybe the fact that most of the projects under development now are primarily residential buildings will be the difference.

Seems like an increased height limit in "the expanse" would be a good strategy. Many other more-developed downtowns are developed that way. It would increase density and encourage in-fill; it would give taller buildings in the middle a view of water over the smaller buildings along the waterfront; and it would be visually more effective. Imagine, if city commissioners would just see downtown as a place for "tall buildings" we might just get somewhere with it.

Yeah, and I was just suggesting that the peaks and troughs are not going to be as pronounced anymore due to changing demographic trends, i'e', people wanting to live downtown. et.al.

The rules are changing. It's not likely going to be a handful of buildings, and then wait several years for another handful. Growth will be continuous (though not always manic).
