Monorail @ Pearson
I went to Pearson airport yesterday and I saw the monorail. Its really cool. Does anyone have any pics or info on it? Is it one of the first In NA? I guess its the first in Canada. BTW the new Terminal 1 is also very nice. Even the janitors have make up and nice clothes

Cool. When I fly into Toronto (and the horrible temporary six years Infield Terminal), I hope I can ride it, or at least see it!

The 'monorail' at Pearson is in fact a cable car. There is a cable running along the track that pulls the train along it. It is supposed to replace the buses that currently bring passengers between terminals, however will only connect terminal 1 and 3 (as terminal 2 is to be eventually torn down). I believe it also has a stop at a parking lot further out from the airport. I also heard the planning will allow for a connection with a future Pearson-downtown express train (should it ever be built).
It is a free service provided by the GTAA, but not sure when it will be fully operational. I remember seeing it move around the airport during testing over the summer. Looks pretty cool. I'm pretty sure it's not the first 'monorail' in North America. There is a real monorail in at least two places I know of. One at Walt Disney World in Orlando, and one in Las Vegas running between several hotel/casinos on the strip and the convention center.

I think the cables pull the cars along the tracks from beneath.

Monorail! Monorail! Monorail!
When I was in Tokyo, I was on a 'twin - track' monorail! (2 clear metal tracks that guides the train. They can call the twin - track train a monorail if they wish.... they can call it a pitchfork... it's still not a monorail.) Do we have the brains to link that cable car up with the GO trains, that pass darn well near Pearson? I have my serious doubts. |
