Semarang: A Harmonious Blending of Cultures
Semarang ![]() Semarang is a city on the north coast of the island of Java, Indonesia. It is the capital of the province of Central Java (Jawa Tengah). It has an area of 373,67 km² and approximately 1.5 million people making it the Indonesia's fifth largest city . Semarang is located at 6°58′ S 110°25′ E. A major port during the Dutch colonial era, and still an important port today, the city is known in Indonesia for its large ethnically Chinese population. The name of the city, Semarang, may have originated from the concatenation of the words "asem" (tamarind) and "arang".

Semarang used to be one of the most developed city ports in Asia in 1500-1800; it was far more developed than Jakarta, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
That's why also Zheng He came all the way to Semarang. Semarang was also the birth place of Kian Gwan, the first conglomerate company in Asia. Kian Gwan companies (Rajawali Nusantara, Phapros, etc)were nationalized (read: taken away) by the government of Indonesia. The only remaining Kian Gwan company is located in Bangkok, Thailand. Kian Gwan's founder Oeij Tiong Ham is Asia's first millionaire, when he passed away he left a wealth of well over 200 million guilders. Check photo archive at http://www.semarang.nl/ |

beautiful pictures... i lovee looking at old mosque designs, dutch-style churches, and the 'china towns'/kota areas...i wish they would restore some of these beautiful designs in Jakarta (kota area, fatahillah, etc)..and hopefully..not leave them to be looking like a dump
because these historical past & architecture is what we are..and what defines our cities...hmm i wanted to go to semarang now and ask my sister to come (photography timee!)

I think that other cities in Indonesia still could preserve Old buildings except at Jakarta (mostly they destroy and replace it with Ruko no value at all)do take some photos and share it with us

Commenting the pic posted by Encon on the Semarang's mosque. It is really sad when one translates "Islamic" art and architecture as being synonymous with Arabic's culture--not that the term "Islamic" itself is literally correct when describing a style arising from the region. Islam as a culture spans from Spain to Indonesia--such a vast tract of geographic area to be encompassed into one architecture style and vocabulary. Given this fact, I found the colonnade to be engrossingly pretentious. Why couldn't the architect/commissioner/builder/whoever built the mosque that simply adapts to the vernacular architecture? Didn't they remember learning about our "prized" Masjid Agung Demak back in the 3rd grade of elementary school? When will we stop turning our religious places into another prototypes of suburbia--each with a theme of its own? Should there be a "Gereja Legenda, Masjid Wisata, or Pura Bunga"? San Vitale, Rotondo San Constanza, the Hagia Sophia do not belong to Indonesian culture and nor should they ever be.
(I couldn't imagine looking at the actual pictures of the mosque! And I was merely commenting on the colonnade.)
