Well lets compare why. MAD has IB, Air Europa, and some European LCC carriers. Also isn't IB not doing to well financially and passengers wise. Plus its IB's home base. BCN on the other hand has a lot of European LCC carriers like Ryanair, Wizz, and Easy Jet who have large presents in BCN. Also no one airline dominants the market share unlike MAD with IB. So its a win win situation for BCN.

Well, some years ago when Iberia decided to reduce its presence at Barcelona airport it was true that the market share was very divided and there wasn't an airline with a dominant position, but in recent years Vueling its taking this role. This is one of the reasons why Barcelona is still growing in a crisis period in Spain.

Given Barcelona's tourist worthiness, I'm surprised there aren't more direct flights from the US. I think there's an opportunity here.

Vueling (that belongs to Iberia and IAG group) is the main carrier at BCN airport. Vueling is based in BCN!
In Madrid now they are going to have AVE (high speed trains) to all Spanish major cities, so many people are not taking the plane anymore...

Iberia started to quit BCN Airport in the year 2000, now it has only 1 route: from BCN to Madrid!
You all forget the cruises, BCN airport is growing a lot thanks to cruisers. Barcelona is now the 1st port for cruises in Europe and the 4th in the world!

Thanks to the cruisers, there are more flights from USA and Canada to BCN than ever!
3 milion cruisers are expected this year at Barcelona Port.

Emirates will use A380 for his BCN route since February 1st.

http://www.routes-news.com/news/1-ne...lights-to-a380

Quote:
Emirates will fly daily from Dubai (DXB) to Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) with an A380 from February 1, 2014.

A B777-300ER currently flies the route but the A380 will add almost 44% to the service’s capacity.

The service will be the Barcelona El Prat’s first permanent A380 service, according to Emirates.

Barcelona, which joined Emirates' route map in July 2012, is among the carrier’s most successful new destinations from last year, said Hubert Frach, divisional senior VP Commercial Operations West.

"In line with this steady growth we feel that the time is ripe to announce the launch of our A380 service, which will continue to connect customers in Spain with Dubai as well as key destinations in Australasia, the Indian Subcontinent and the Far East."

Travellers will be able to fly to 12 destinations in Australia and the Far and Middle East through onward A380 flights from Dubai, said the carrier.

"The A380 has been a part of our fleet for almost five years and continues to pique customer interest wherever it flies. Introducing the A380 to Barcelona permanently will not only increase our capacity but will also further highlight our commitment to the city," said Frach.
