When it doesn't become economically viable anymore to build buildings that tall.

Not really. We would have ended the race at about 300m then.

I think the limit is when the people staying there don't get enough oxygen.

How far in the future do you want to project? Society could have changed substantially in a few hundred years time for people to want to live in one tube alone. If it's in the next few decades though, someone willing to basically to risk a few billion dollars can top burj dubai. It's not an engineering problem but more an economics problems as pointed out. But if monuments are built hey. A few billion $ may not be a lot for a city that also wants to get the limelight.

Who knows? Depends how far you want to look into the future. In 50,000 years they might be building skyscrapers on places with very low gravity making building to stupid heights alot simpler. It's too had to say. In our life times I don't think we'll see anything over a mile. Could see a couple of 1000m-1500m towards the end of the centuary though I suppose.

I was reading in the Dubai form that there is a rumor that Nakheel is planning a mile high building. They took it serious, and hired several structural engineers from around the planet to see if its even possible.. every one of the structural engineers claimed that its completely possible to go that high.. theoretically, they can build that high right now even with some tweaking of the tech required to go up that high.. its just going to cost too much to build, and then maintain!

I will speculate 3km, AKA I read a book from Robert Silverberg called 'the world inside' and everyone lived in 'urban monads' that were 1000 floors and 3km high!!!

the tallest structures will be the SPACE ELEVATORS, about 30 THOUSAND kilometers tall... their top will be attached to a meteor probably, in geosynchronious orbit.
