Incredible! After this opens, Beijing should be able to overtake London as the busiest airport system in the world.

Wouldn't be wiser to create a single, new mega-airport to maximize connections?

And tear down the existing multi-billion dollar airport? I’m sure everyone would be all for it. /s

Financial logic and land allocation aside, having a ~200 million capacity airport would be horrible for connecting passengers. Just take a look at Al Maktoum airport’s design.

PVG is weighing up that scheme with plans to become a 160+ million pax airport.

Let's calm a little... there are 63M additional passengers that Beijing needs to add in order to overtake London. Capacity doesn't mean it will reach that mark immediately. Even if in a few years, it reaches its capacity of 72M, London would have grown as well.

The scale of construction for the new PEK is simply amazing. Other than DEN (which opened with five runways in 1995), has a "greenfield" airport ever been built to this large in its opening phase before? There are so many exciting airport projects underway in China right now. Airports like DFW, PVG, CDG are massive today, but their first phases only included one or two runways.

Excited to see more photos as this project takes shape - thanks for sharing them! I will be in Beijing next month, and I'm hoping to get a glimpse of the new airport during takeoff or landing at PEK.

you mean the runway reserved for the military? In any event it is U/C and counts as part of the overalll project. So five runways U/C in the pic?

The chinese seem to be creatively challenged when it comes to airline liveries. Not surprised.
