Well, same thing happens in Asia. Except most airports major airlines fly to only stop at major airports. Smaller airlines such as DragonAir act as "regional airlines."

Sometimes, it depends on the airline company and the size of the city. There are smaller low-fare airlines that deliberately serve small cities, but the profit margin is usually so low that they end up declaring bankruptcy a few years later.

hkskyline, I don't understand your argument. As I'm sure you know, the hub-and-spoke system is used worldwide. Transit passengers are only counted once, not twice. The United States is a country of 300 million people who, with limited rail systems, are completely dependent on air travel for long distance transport.

No. This system is not so popular elsewhere, such as in Europe, where the market is fragmented with many players. At the same time, the low-cost carriers connect point-to-point. easyJet and Ryanair run many hubs around the continent. It simply doesn't make sense to transit in Dublin or London when travelling within the continent. Rail competition makes transit flights even less desirable.

In Asia, it's the same story. The market is fragmented. Even in China, I don't think the transit market is that big at all.

My cousin who lives in Beijing said to me that Terminal 3D (the middle concourse of Terminal 3) is still not in use after the Olympics. If it is reserved for international flights, why does the operator of Beijing Capital Airport do not allow the likes of Philippine Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and other non-aligned international carriers to move from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3D?

ACI has just finalised their 2009 numbers. BCIA now ranks 3rd in terms of total passenger traffic.

I don't think Beijing is the biggest. I think Dubai terminal is bigger now.

We already have a 75-odd page on BCIA. Been there, BTW.
