One last warning, I do not want to hear anymore India Vs. China, Communist Government, or any other irrelevant information. This thread is for PEK news, development, and photo discussion. A few members have already been suspended as a result already, and I will not hesitate to suspend more for an even longer period of time if this goes on.

Different part of the terminal. C gates are for domestic flights and are part of the main portion of T3, so all the arrivals are on the lower floor, similar to HKG. E gates are for the international flights and are part of the second portion of T3, where arriving passengers are on the upper floor, then go down to take the train back to the arrivals hall of the main T3 terminal (C side).

Chinese capital prepares to build its second large airport: newspaper
12 January 2011

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- China is likely to begin work on a second large civil airport for its capital this year, according to a newspaper report on Wednesday.

The new airport, with a planned capacity to handle at least 60 million passengers a year, is expected to shoulder part of the traffic pressure on Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA), said the report of China Daily.

The possible construction start was a year later than the civil aviation industry had expected, it said.

The BCIA is now the world's second largest airport in terms of passenger traffic after handling 73.9 million passengers last year, a number close to its planned capacity of 76 million passengers by 2015.

"It is very urgent that we start building the second airport in Beijing now. It is now impossible to add even one more flight to the tight daily schedule of the capital airport," Li Jiaxiang. head of Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), was quoted as saying.

Li said all preparations are in place now, but the project's commencement needs a nod from the State Council, China's cabinet.

He estimated the investment needed for the project will be "at least 100 billion yuan (15 billion U.S. dollars)".

Li did not elaborate on the new airport's location, but earlier reports quoted civil aviation officials as saying that it will be in Daxing district in southern Beijing.

The capital's second airport is one of 11 new airports that the CAAC plans to build in 2011. Enditem

I will be transitting PEK in March and will have approximately 4hrs between flights.
So I was wondering:
  1. Is photography allowed from inside the terminal?
  2. If so, are there any good spots to take photos?

Yes photography is allowed inside the terminal, however depends on the day the glare from the glass will prevent you from taking a good shot, anywhere near the departure gates are fine, the waiting area is pretty close to the windows.

Like other airports, don't take photos in the immigration / security check areas.

Thanks.
How much zoom do you think I'll need to catch arrivals and departures on Rwys 36R/18L and 01/19 respectively

Wow, impressive. I'd love to be working on one of these projects!

Does PEK have any observation deck/viewing deck similar to HKIA?

Both runways are of the same distance to the terminal, however 01/19 is a bit north compare to 36/18. If you use DSLR you should get a 250mm telescope lens, if use compact or super zoom then anything more than 5X will do.
