http://www.naco.nl/english/worldwide...l-airport.html

Quote:
NACO designed the winning master plan for the world’s largest airport. The Beijing New International Airport (BNIA) will be built near the Chinese capital of Beijing in the Daxing District. With a capacity to handle up to 130 million annual passengers, the airport will have a total of eight runways. The current airport, Beijing Capital International Airport, will be reaching its design capacity within a few years, making the need for a new airport imminent.

NACO paid special attention to sustainability when designing the master plan for the new airport. Incorporated into the design are all modes of public transport (including high speed trains, metro and inter-airport trains) which will be processed in a Ground Transportation Center in front of the new terminals. The layout of the runways, taxiways and aprons have been carefully designed to keep taxi distances as short as possible, thereby lessening fuel burn and CO2 emissions.

That looks insane! 8 runways! Are they closing the other airport when this opens?

The current airport will remain open. Beijing will have 2 passenger international airports when this one opens.

And they'll probably need both open too to meet rising demand.

Even with the rising demand, I just find the size incredible. This will be the biggest airport in the world.

Well, you will need to account that China has been a fast-growing aviation market that has a huge market: imagine over 800 million potential travelers from this country alone, with thousands of domestic flights operating nearly daily. I really can imagine that size for Beijing, but I wonder which airlines will operate from what terminal.

Where is Daxing Station relative to Beijing-Langfang-Shanghai and Beijing-Zhuozhou-Shijiazhuang high speed railways?

Maybe. Perhaps it will be much bigger than the current Heathrow or Denver airports. But I don't know what you mean about PEK being bigger than most cities in Europe: you mean airport size, city land area size...?

They should build this in addiction to Beijing Capital International Airport, that would be even better!

Sure. But I wonder if the land size of PEK is enough to start with for a mega-expansion like those shown in pictures.

On Google Maps, I see there is plenty of space, just demolish a few 80's houses near it and your good.

Oh well... That would mean removing some nearby factories too.

The whole thing will be built in stages, but this time they will acquire enough land to allow its expansion to the eventual size. It's absolutely impossible to expand PEK now as land acquisition cost will be prohibitively high.

Ah yes. That definitely makes sense. I am looking forward to seeing both the construction and completion of the airport.
