MANILA, Philippines – A taxi company in Davao City now has the most advanced mode of payment for cabs after installing ATM debit card terminals in its units. Twenty Mabuhay black taxis, modeled after the black taxis of London, now accept fare payments from passengers using Bancnet and Megalink ATM debit cards. A GPS system has also been installed in each unit, meaning their location and the driver's speed can now be monitored. “Noon sinasabi ng pasahero na dadaan muna tayo sa ATM, magwi-withdraw. So now, we give convenience sa pasahero na sa loob na ng taxi pwede niyang i-swipe ang ATM,” said Mabuhya Taxi assistant manager RyanTan. The innovations also have security benefits since ATM payments mean the drivers have little cash on hand and won't be a target for robbers. The GPS, on the other hand, is a carjacking deterrent since the units can be located anywhere. The added technology comes at no added cost to commuters because Mabuhay Taxi charges the same as other taxis. The Department of Tourism hopes the high-tech taxis will attract more tourists to Davao City. -

Taxis accepting ATM payment debut in Davao City JULIA JASMINE STA. ROMANA July 6, 2012 1:42pm Cashless commuting debuted in Davao City Friday after a local taxi company deployed cabs that accept fare payment via automated teller machine (ATM) cards. Premium units of Mabuhay Taxi have ATM card terminals where passengers can swipe their cards to pay their fares, radio dzBB's Davao affiliate reported. With the new payment system, passengers need not worry about having the exact change for fares although they have to make sure their ATM accounts have enough funds, it added. Also, the dzBB report said the cabs will still issue receipts to the passengers if needed. First of their kind The black, cashless taxis are claimed to be the first of their kind anywhere in the Philippines. The cabs come with wireless ATM/Debit Card Payment Terminals –similar to those found in supermarket checkout counters– that accept Megalink and Bancnet member cards. These card terminals work a lot like those card terminals you see in malls or supermarkets. But instead of connecting to the bank through phone lines, the card terminals connect to the bank directly through GPRS. This means that, as long as there is a mobile phone signal in the area, the passenger can pay for his or her cab fare using an ATM or debit card. Mr. Ryan Tan, Assistant Manager for the Mabuhay Taxi Corporation, assures that the wireless payment system for these taxis will work practically anywhere in Davao City. “The only places that the card terminals won’t work are in basement parking and in the outskirts of the city. These terminals also come with signal indicators that tell the driver that the area doesn’t have a GPRS signal and the passenger would have to pay for their fare in cash. And we can assure the riding public that there will be no surcharges and they can use their ATM/debit cards even at the minimum or flag down rate, ” he said. Cash for gas One concern that was raised by the taxi drivers is that, with the cashless system, they may run out of cash for gas. They also worry that if this system becomes so successful, they may have a hard time getting their pay. The Mabuhay Taxi Corporation says it hopes to solve this problem by shouldering the cost of gasoline. According to the company, all the taxis that come out of their lot have a full tank of gas, enough for a 24 hour shift. And with the card payment system, they’d be able to more accurate records of how much a driver actually made that day. The drivers need only to pick up their earnings, in cash, at the taxi lot at the end of their shift. This system also makes it safer for taxi drivers to work. With less cash, there’s less temptation for robbers who prey on taxi drivers. Global positioning system These taxi cabs also come withfully automated Global Positioning System (GPS). This allows the taxi dispatchers to monitor the location of their taxis at any time. The GPS system allows the taxis to avoid traffic jams and helps the taxi drivers locate their phone or text clients, and help effectively dispatch the cabs to places they’re most needed.Mr. Tan says that they plan to eventually equip all their taxis with wireless card terminals and GPS, although passengers still have the option of paying in cash. They also plan to eventually expand their wireless card terminals to accept credit cards and to coordinate with international banks to accommodate credit cards and debit cards used by tourists. — LBG/TJD, GMA News http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story...-in-davao-city

After the e-jeepney, prototype of e-trike mock up unveiled
By Alexander Villafania Several months after the start a major electric vehicle initiative, a prototype of the winning electric tricycle (e-trike) design was unveiled by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The prototype was created by Japanese developer Itchiro Hatayama based on the design of a winning entry in the DOE’s E-Trike Design competition. The basic requirement for the design was for the vehicle to be a three-wheeled transport and have a maximum capacity of six passengers (excluding driver). “The winning entry was enhanced considering the aspects of safety, functionality and production friendliness. Also taken into consideration were the terrain, passenger capacity and other local operating conditions of a tricycle, whether electric or not. An advertising space was even incorporated into the design for the operators to maximize revenues out of owning and operating an e-trike,” according to Rommel Juan, president of the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines. Juan said that the next phase of the project is to schedule technical meetings with engineers from the DOE. Among the topics to be discussed are the e-trike’s later design, safety and other functional elements. Several types of electric engines are available locally and can be incorporated into the design of the e-trike, the industry group also said. Other plans in the pipeline include discussions with manufacturers regarding manufacturing concerns, mass production, localization efforts as well costs for the project. “We would like to maintain open communication lines with the DOE and we are happy that they have been very receptive to the concerns of the would-be end users, suppliers, assemblers and other players in the e-trike industry,” he said. The E-Trike project was started in an effort to find alternative forms of public transport that are environment-friendly and produce less noise. Several places in the Philippines have already started their own electric vehicle projects, such as Makati, Taguig, and Iloilo, which used e-jeepneys. ![]() ![]() (Photos courtesy of Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines) *** Filquest Media Concepts, Inc. , the parent company of loQal.ph, is a multimedia publisher and provider of web, print, mobile and video content. Ayala to build 'Gangnam-style' bus terminal?
by Cathy Rose A. Garcia, ABS-CBNnews.com Posted at 12/26/2012 3:16 PM | Updated as of 12/27/2012 8:43 AM MANILA, Philippines - Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) is mulling the possibility of building an integrated transport system (ITS) terminal in Quezon City to be patterned after the Seoul Express Bus Terminal in Gangnam district. Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya on Wednesday said Ayala is likely to submit an unsolicited proposal for the ITS project to be built in near the Trinoma mall in North Triangle, Quezon City. "Yung sa Ayala, it's because they are already in the Trinoma area. Most likely they might submit an unsolicited proposal for this. That is allowed, not prohibited. But this will be subject to a Swiss challenge," Abaya told ABS-CBNnews.com. "They're submitting soon, kasi matutuloy talaga ang project na yun," he added, referring to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) ITS project. A separate source said Ayala Land executives were with Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) officials who recently visited South Korea to look at the Seoul Express Bus Terminal's operations. The Seoul Express Bus Terminal, located in Gangnam, is the main bus terminal in the South Korean capital. Passengers can buy tickets with designated seat numbers, while the departure and arrival of buses are synchronized. The bus terminal is also linked to the Seoul subway. The DOTC's ITS project involves constructing three mass transportation terminals that will connect commuters from provinces to the MRT-3, LRT 1 and 2, buses, taxis and other public utility vehicles in Metro Manila. It is expected to help decongest traffic along EDSA and make it easier for commuters to travel to and from Metro Manila. "The integrated transport system will be intermodal with 3 locations. One is at FTI - there you have SLEX (South Luzon Expressway) and PNR (Philippine National Railways). Then the Trinoma North Triangle area, you have MRT-3, LRT-1 and eventually MRT-7, and the buses coming from Mindanao Avenue, it falls in that area. The other one is at the Coastal mall, the reclamation area, Cavitex and at the same time LRT-1 will go through the station," Abaya said. The Transportation Secretary said there will be an open competitive bidding for each of the terminals. "Hopefully we can bid it out first quarter or first semester. The construction period is a year and a half," Abaya said. Ayala Land is currently developing the first phase of Vertis North in the North Triangle property next to Trinoma Mall. The P65-billion, 29-hectarre Vertis North project will have 45 towers, composed of offices, retail space, a hotel, residential buildings and open spaces, to be developed over a 10-year period. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/business/...e-bus-terminal

A makeover for PHL license plates
![]() Starting July 2013 up to June 2018, vehicles in the PHL will sport new license plates with four digits instead of three, with public utility vehicles such as jeeps required to have their routes placed on their license plates, such as the yellow plate above. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is still seeking bidders for the production of new license plates, including screws and stickers. GMA News http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/photo...license-plates
