Benicia-Martinez Bridge Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Quote:
She’s a bit of a plain Jane compared to some of the Bay Area’s other toll bridges, but the original span of the Benicia-Martinez Bridge is nonetheless a transportation workhorse, and will get some love next week as officials gather to celebrate her 50th birthday.

Spanning the Carquinez Strait along Interstate 680, and connecting Contra Costa County with Solano County, the 1.2-mile span carried both directions of traffic when it originally opened on September 16, 1962. Growing traffic volumes in the ensuing decades overwhelmed the original span, prompting MTC’s Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) and Caltrans to partner on building a second parallel span, which opened in 2007. The original span was converted to carry four lanes of southbound traffic as well as a new bicycle and pedestrian pathway, while its younger sister span carries five lanes of northbound traffic.

...

“The Benicia-Martinez Bridge, quite simply, was the key to unlocking the biggest period of growth in central Solano County history. So it’s entirely appropriate that we celebrate the bridge’s first 50 years, and also look forward to a healthy and prosperous middle age,” said MTC Commissioner Jim Spering, who also sits on the Solano County Board of Supervisors and is vice chair of that body.

While they are different structural types, both the old and new Benicia-Martinez spans appear as clean ribbons of roadway stretching across the Strait. A scalloped railroad bridge that sits between the old and the new motor vehicle bridges dates back to1930 and gives the site additional architectural interest. The twin-spanned car/truck facility carried nearly 18 million toll-paying vehicles in 2010-11, making it the third-busiest among the region’s seven state-owned toll bridges.

Carmageddon II does not have a huge impact on the L.A. freeway network. The Hollywood Freeway is a bit slow, but I understand this is the case on just about any day.

Very nice picture. This interchange was previously a cloverleaf interchange that appears to have been converted to a Parclo B4 interchange. A Parclo B4 interchange (exiting loop ramps from the freeway) allows for better signal progression along the arterial street than a Parclo A4 interchange (entering loop ramps onto the freeway).

it's a hybrid. the B4 is for the 495 Express Lanes to VA7/Leesburg Pike while the A4 will still exist for Mainline 495 to VA 7/Leesburg Pike.

I must think of it´s best definition first. -Radi Click

Pennsylvania Turnpike

The PA Turnpike turns 72 years today.

The first section opened on October 1, 1940. It stretched from near Harrisburg to near Pittsburgh.

One of the worst highways in the country. Drove it to Ohio one summer overnight. Never again.

One of the most scenic highways in the East, but you would have missed that overnight.

How long ago was this? What was bad about it?

The scenery is beautiful no doubt, but the highway is old and the tightness along with the truck traffic, high tolls, and difficult terrain make it a pass for me. If going through PA, it's better to go through I-80, it's just as boring but at least it's "free" LOL.

From ALDOT and AL.com

The first phase of a $38.7 million project to repave a 10 mile stretch of Interstate 20/59 between Birmingham and Leeds is expected to start Sunday night, Alabama Department of Transportation officials said tonight.

ALDOT officials have said they the work will stretch from I-20/59 starting near Messer Airport Highway and continue on Interstate 20 after it splits from I-59 and end in Leeds at exit 140 near the Shops of Grand River and Bass Pro Shops.

Phase two is expected to begin in early spring 2013 and will require more lane closures. The entire project is expected to be finished winter 2013.

About 75,000 vehicles -- 21 percent of those vehicles are large trucks -- travel each day past the Birmingham airport and continue on I-20 to the U.S. 78 exit leading to Leeds retail outlet center.

The heavy volume and heavy loads have worn out the concrete and asphalt.

The entire area will be paved in asphalt, save for a patch of I-20/59 on a sharp curve -- known to drivers as dead man's curve -- that will be paved in concrete.

That's because if a truck overturned there, concrete would sustain less damage and handle chemical spills better than asphalt, ALDOT officials have said.
