Seems like the opposite of a mess to me. The massive construction isn't affecting traffic much (at least in the photos).

I'm not sure all those bridges will be turned into interchanges. Some might end up as bridges that do not interchange with I-11 and some might not even cross I-11.

I-610, Houston, TX

25 lanes on I-610 or 'The Loop' in Houston, Texas. This is between the US 290 and I-10 interchanges.

Houston

Houston has gotten new imagery in Google Earth, dated August 2015. It shows many projects under construction. Here's an update.

1. The US 290 widening in northwest Houston. This is the last major freeway in Houston that has not been significantly improved since construction. They only added a reversible lane.

2. The SH 99 / SH 249 (Grand Parkway / Tomball Parkway) interchange in northwestern Harris County. Notice how SH 249 is paved with asphalt, there are only a few asphalt freeways in the Greater Houston area.

3. New direct connectors at the SH 249 / Beltway 8 interchange. Three of them opened to traffic yesterday (!) at a cost of $ 23 million.

4. The I-45 / SH 99 interchange in northern Harris County. SH 99 is planned to open 'late 2015'.

5. The I-69 / SH 99 interchange northeast of Houston. This is the end of the current construction phase of SH 99 around Houston.

6. The I-45 / SH 242 direct connectors in Montgomery County. The direct connectors opened this year and are the first tolled direct connectors in the United States.

7. Because it looks so nice... The I-45 / Beltway 8 interchange in southeastern Houston.

How often (and to what scale) is eminent domain employed in highway construction nowadays in the US?

Depends where you live. If you look at the Grand Parkway shown above they used it a LOT (hundreds of pieces of property), but in more liberal areas almost never.

I'd just like to add, as a Houstonian, that those "asphalt paved" highways aren't actually asphalt-paved highways. The new 249 Tomball Tollway, and a segment of the Beltway 8 West loop were all constructed and built using concrete, but were given an asphalt overlay. These were used as test pieces (and still are) for things like noise pollution control and reduction. Other areas, like the I-45 North segment from Downtown to roughly the Beltway 8 Loop, as well as 69 South from 610 to the Beltway, were given an asphalt overlay to help control the effects of freeway erosion and destruction.

I could see this. Although as a liberal myself I would actually give up my property (if I owned any) for a severance package in return for a shiny highway.

Hey, I27, in Texas, seems kinda pointless. Seems like it can be extended down to Midland-Odessa, and up Northeast through Oklahoma panhandle to Wichita. It could improve Midland-Odessa's place, in terms of a hub for freight transit. Maybe later, an improved link to Chihuahua, MEX

On a side note, Texas voters have strongly approved Proposition 7 yesterday, which passed with 83% for. Proposition 7 will dedicate $ 2.5 billion of sales tax to highway funding annually, starting in 2018. Another $ 500 million from the vehicle registration fees will annually be dedicated to highways, starting in 2020.

This means that from 2020, there will be $ 3 billion more for roads every year. It is the largest road funding increase in state history. This comes on top of the $ 1.7 billion in funding from proposition that was approved by voters in November 2014. This almost eliminates the $ 5 billion per year funding shortfall needed to meet the demands of growing Texas.

The funding cannot be allocated to toll roads, so expect a major boom in untolled freeway construction over the next couple of years. This is the result of the growing anti-toll sentiment over the past couple of years.

Interesting interchange along I-41 (US 45) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This used to be a diamond interchange, it was reconstructed this year.

I-70, Utah

A 1971 view of Interstate 70 in Utah, when it had only two lanes. Super two Interstate Highways were fairly rare.

Green Bay, Wisconsin

Green Bay, Wisconsin is going Texas-style.

The I-41 / WIS-29 interchange was built recently. It used to be a diamond interchange.

The I-41 / I-43 interchange is currently under construction.

one year ago this pic would not have been posted in the interstates thread as I-41 used to be just US41

Interstate 169, Texas

SH 550 segment gets new name

The approximately 1 1/2-mile stretch of State Highway 550 between Interstate 69E and Old Alice Road has been officially renamed I-169 by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which now considers the segment part of the federal interstate system.
Full report: http://www.brownsvilleherald.com/pre...12a4ddd38.html

SH 550 is a toll road that connects I-69E to the Port of Brownsville in South Texas.
