I would say I-189 is worse. But NY is full of stupid road numbers and none of them make sense.
NY 9N (not north, it's just that the have 9A, 9B and so on also...) was always my favorite haha

Or the surprisingly signed NY route 456

The route through Utica (NY-5 / NY-8) is currently being upgraded. I doubt if it will be designated as an Interstate Highway, but they removed a couple of signalized intersections and replaced a section of elevated highway.

I-180 in Cheyenne WY is worse, as it is not a motorway freeway at all.

Valid point, but the number 238 has no business existing in the Interstate system unless and until there's an I-38.

It's allowed because there were no available x80 route numbers at the time it was added to the Interstate system and California does not duplicate route numbers. It was suggested that some route switching take place and it would have been numbered as part of I580, but that would have meant using I180 for part of the existing I580, and California already had a route 180 in the Central valley.

However, 480 is now available, but there has been no one suggesting that it be renumbered, and it keeps the old CA state highway number as an interstate.

I-95 NB, central Florida, post-Thanksgiving

Made a quick back-and-forth trip around Thanksgiving to ferry my mother down to Port St Lucie. On the way back, I took a bunch of hand-helds. Here's a couple, including the bridge on the east bypass around Jacksonville that I'd never been on before. I-95 is in probably its' best shape in decades, AFAIC, even around Washington/Baltimore it's much better than it had been.

So avoiding one anomaly (and at state level) - i.e., the duplication on an Interstate of a number already used in the state system* - is justification for creating another and in the Interstate system - i.e., I-238?

Why don't they just give 580 a two-digit number - I-50, for example - though? There are plenty available, the road (as part of the Bay Area-to-Los Angeles route) is important enough, and there are shorter two-digit Interstates in the system. Then 238 could become 250 or whatever.

*And some distance away...by the way, I-238 duplicates a state number as well, in the same county.

I-95 Jacksonville, FL

Construction on I-95 in Jacksonville, Florida, just south of downtown.
Known as the Overland Bridge project, it will improve traffic flow along the I-95 corridor just south of the Fuller Warren Bridge. I-95 is being widened to provide an additional lane for southbound traffic. As the project is built, traffic uses parallel roadways which, upon completion of the I-95 bridge structures, will remain and provide additional capacity for traffic between the Fuller Warren Bridge and north of Emerson Street. Construction is expected to end in late 2016/early 2017.

Well, they can't call it I-17. That's in use and it'd have to run north and south anyway. I-50 would be a nod to US 50, which used to enter the Bay Area from the east.

I didn't mean to suggest that. Anyway, it was I-880 in the Bay Area that used by part of State Route 17, not I-580. Sorry about that.

Jacksonville seems like it has overbuilt infrastructure. There's also that silly monorail that cost more than a conventional light rail. That city is a mess. An anemic dead downtown, some ghetto, and some sprawl.

Jacksonville is currently developing a new outer beltway from I-10 to I-95 south of the city. It will be a toll road: Florida State Road 23

Jacksonville is lacking on infrastructure a bit for being a state capital.

Whether or not a city is a capital has virtually nothing to do with its infrastructure needs. Commerce, not bureaucracy, drives the need for infrastructure.

Being a state capital with a major university can be a dynamic combo though. Austin for example. Most small city state capitals are doing well these, even the ones in depressed states like Lansing in Michigan. While the US is a mature country and its unlikely many "new" major cities are going to emerge in the future, these small but highly educated and livable small cities have the best conceivable chance of growing massively to become big metros.

Of course Tally can be kind of underwhelming but it's not that small or crappy. I thought it was a neat place when my family temporarily lived in an outlying small town about 15 minutes away when I was 11 years old. It was generally a lot better than the surrounding deep south region and kind of broke the stereotypes. Also near untouched public beaches but inland enough to not be bothered by hurricanes like other Florida cities. Doesn't feel like Florida at all though. That region has its own vibe.
