What are the traffic levels on US-85 like to justify this construction? It runs parallel to I-10 all the way into El Paso downtown anyway. Is something else planned for US-85 to make it the preferable route to the border as opposed to I-10 (or vice versa)?

Border West Expressway

They are constructing the 'Border West Expressway', a new toll road on top of US 85 in western El Paso.

http://borderwestexpressway.com/

The plan is to have two parallel highways through the El Paso area, I-10 and US 85 / Loop 375.

Houston has experienced very heavy rainfall over the night and is still ongoing. Some locations have received over 20 inches overnight. Most freeways are flooded at some point. Many subdivisions are also flooded. Officials compare the flooding to Tropical Storm Allison, the worst flooding event in Houston history.

This is Grand Parkway (State Highway 99) in northern Harris County.

Before anyone asks why they put the freeway underneath that road, it's because there's an airport right next to the newly constructed freeway (The airport's radar tower is actually in the ROW of the freeway) and they could not put in an overpass at this intersection because it is in the middle of the runway flight path.

There's some incredible flooding going on, and it doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon.

There are plans for a big bridge at that location.

They updated google earth for Las Vegas so you can see the future Interstate 11 (Boulder City Bypass) progress. You can also see the first flyover under construction on the US95/CC215 interchange.

I-57, Arkansas

They're talking about upgrading the US 67 freeway in Arkansas to Interstate status. It would be I-57 between Little Rock and Walnut Ridge. I-57 could become the shortest freeway route from Dallas to Chicago.

From one side, it looks like a logical extension of I-57, but what are the chances that the missing segment from Walnut Ridge to Sikeston gets built? Arkansas is broke and the last segment to Walnut Ridge has been under construction for a very long time at a slow pace. If you extrapolate that on the 100 miles of missing Interstate into Missouri, it will take many decades if not nearly a century to complete it.

Not to mention that multiple corridors run through Arkansas that needs upgrading. They're talking about six-laning I-40 for a long time now. And I-49 is supposed to run through western Arkansas, but at current pace won't be completed in 50 years. And then there's the I-69 route that would run through southeastern Arkansas. That's a lot of Interstate mileage to build or upgrade when there's almost no money available.

It may be also an extension to I-30. However I read many years ago it would be I-730, a 3di instead.

A 3-digit Interstate number seems more appropriate as there is no chance the rest of the route will be constructed in the foreseeable future. Walnut Ridge / Hoxie are too small to be a logical endpoint of a 2-digit Interstate Highway.

Another issue is the possible routing of an Interstate Highway between Walnut Ridge and Sikeston, Missouri. It needs to be a really direct route to be notably shorter & faster than I-40/55. Today the difference is only a few miles on a 250 mile (4 hour) route. Which makes it harder to justify the construction of 100+ miles of new Interstate Highway.

I wonder if building the Pat Tillman Bridge right by the Hoover Dam, with the bypass around Boulder City, was a little short-sighted. They could've built the bridge about 5 miles south, and then had the southern part of the bypass just head straight east towards US 93. I guess it would be more money for more new road, in addition to the new bridge, but then you can isolate Hoover Dam from the road network a little better for security reasons.

The rugged mountain terrain would make building a new road pretty expensive.

The Hoover dam is in itself quite a destination too - a good chunk of traffic will get off to see it.
